Been working on this for a while and proud to finally announce...

TCMAS Tour of the Minnesota Zoo Aquatics Area

MAY 18, 2024 5pm-7pm
(2 tours- 5:30 and 6pm)

13000 Zoo Blvd, Apple Valley, MN 55124

Thanks to Abby at the zoo this will include some behind the scenes looks at the life support systems for their reef tank and other systems.

The best part? this event will be FREE to current TCMAS members in good standing and 2 guests!

Strict limit of 50 total attendees, RSVP is FULL. We will have a printed list of rsvp so PLEASE do not show up if you’re not on the list.

(Please note: children count toward guest spots and MUST be supervised at all times)

Coral Donations:
Once again, the zoo is open to any healthy stony coral donations the members may have to offer, to help restock and diversify the species in their care. This is an awesome way to say thanks to the aquatics dept that made this event happen for the first time in years, and see your corals for years to come in professional care!

See post #31 on this thread for details on what they are looking for.

I recently visited the MN Zoo, and the reef tank looks very good. :)

I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff I'd love to come it sounds awesome!! 😁

Not sure if they want softies but I have plenty of those I could cut a chunk off from my tank... or if I can get anything special through the shop I'd be happy to donate some stuff.

This sounds awesome! Anyone else planning to bring kids along? I signed up for extra spots to bring mine, but if I'm the only one that's bringing kids I'm happy to turn those spots over to others instead and leave the event kid free. :)

I have two RBTA I would be glad to share with them. Also in to go, 3 total

Bringing my toddler along, but I stress the kids need to be supervised.

Please note each member is limited to two guests, including kids. If there is open spots left closer to the event, we will open it up to more.

Oh I am totally in for this!

Thank you so much for the time and effort in setting this up!

I would like to go is there a registration page?

Interesting..... when I took down my 215 a couple of years ago I contacted the Zoo about donating some large corals. They were rather rude and stated that they never accept donations of livestock. I reminded them about the original donations that the club made and they just blew me off.

I'd like to hear more about donating too. I'd be more than happy to donate something, but I can't imagine they want just any old thing...

That is mostly true. They have to get special approval even though they are donations as a nonprofit govt agency every donation has a financial value/impact on their budget, grants etc is my assumption.

Maybe Abby can better articulate than me.

She was very clear they are very grateful to get anything, as it adds biodiversity to their program. Maybe don’t bring 10 frags of the same thing?

I personally will bring some nice stuff just because I want to see it under better care in a big tank than I can provide.

Yeah I think it would be very cool to go back in a year or two and find my own corals there, hopefully much bigger.

From what I've heard, they went through some bad staff over the past decade at times in the aquarium teams, specifically. Emily seems like she is more responsive to the public.

If you want to get a receipt for a tax-deductible donation, then there could be more effort involved on the Zoo's part which could cause them to not be interested, especially if you are donating a single small coral. There is a cost to them to do the paperwork.

This is so awesome! Thanks for putting this together. A trip to this area, and seeing the tank of blue spotted jaw fish, is why I got started in this hobby again. My wife wanted one of those..... lol.
