My wife wants a slim digital Point and Shoot. I've browsed the big review sites and pretty much want to stay with Canon or Nikon. I just wanted to get some opinions from those that might have them.

What I'd like is:
8+ MP
Very small
Decent size screen
Fast shutter response

Bonus (for me):
Decent Macro

I'd like to stay sub 250 range and, since it's Wednesday and this is for Mother's day, I'll have to buy locally.

I am leaning towards:
Canon SD1100
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=16347

or
Nikon Coolpix S550:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-Camera/26109/COOLPIX-S550.html

Anyone use either of these?

Both look like nice cameras, I've heard good reviews from most people who end up with the Canon PS cameras. But the specs on the nikon seem better - 10 mp vs. 8; up to 2000 iso vs. 1600. Not that you'll need either of these since you have your Digital SLR which can handle more complex photos, but might give evidence to the strength of the technology in the Nikon.

I know that if I was going to get one of these for my mother or wife there would be only one choice: "Pink Melody"...

The optical zoom is a little better on the Nikon also but, as you say, Canon seems to get rave reviews on their P&S lines. Better than Nikon.

My wife isn't much into pink but the blue one looks pretty slick. I might have to swing by BestBuy and check it out tomorrow. With the 12% off coupon for cameras 249+ I have it's actually slightly cheaper than the Nikon also.

We have the cannon and it has done a great job for me. Li uses it for tank pictures now and then if your interested in that.

I don't have experience with these exact cameras, but my father has the Nikon Coolpix, my wife and I have the Canon, but both are 1 or 2 models down from the ones you've posted and at least 1 year old.

Between the two I enjoy the Canon better. It gets some really nice pics espcecially for the quick point and shoot. It's also a little easier to mess with the settings IMO. The coolpix takes some really nice pictures, but seems quirky sometimes. I don't know why.

I'd say go for the Canon if I had to choose one.

I have a top of the line Sony (DSC-V1) point and shoot and I really like it. The "pro-sumer" ones are much better than the bottom of the line crap they sell. At least this was the case 5/6 years ago when I bought that camera.

We have one of the Canon PowerShots.... I could bring that to the meeting (or when I measure your tank) to show you it.... We've been happy with it from a PnS perspective....

Thanks Matt... I'm not going to be making this meeting and only have a few days to make a decision. I'm leaning towards the Canon even though I am a serious Nikon fanboy when it comes to the DSLR and glass..

I know you said you had some brands in mind already, but I have the Olympus Stylus 770SW. I really love it! It has a pretty decent macro, and one setting even has a small LED to light your super-macro stuff. Best of all, IT'S WATERPROOF! They advertise being able to go snorkling with it - even SW! Get those cool underwater shots now!

I bought that camera for my neice last christmas, and it is awsome, you can shoot underwater, it is shatter proof from a normal fall, and has a nice sharp picture as well. Hermitsolo on the boards has one too and took it snorkeling I believe :)
