I would think you could use green board, it's used in bathroom surrounds and is water and mold resistant. Pretty pricey though compared to drywall.

Cant believe how fast time flies, this thread was buried way down the pages... good to see so many active build threads :agree:

so is the world a small place? I think so... I was at menards picking up lumber (question to follow) and got into a conversation with a guy also picking up lumber... guess what he is into fish tanks and reef and knows TCMAS but is active only on RC. Well it so happens I also talked tonight to a Menards employee I know for 5 years who was also into marine tanks, now FW... all in an hour.

Now the question. I'm looking to build a "room" around the sump/fuge in my unfinished basement to trap heat and contain humidity. so the frame is 2x4 lumber, which I already bought today. Need to skin the walls.. is dry wall a good choice? or what are the options?

I want the "room" to work as a buffer/heat trap/insulation in an unheated basement in the event of a power out if/when I'm on vacation. this way there is some breathing room and I'm not breathing down friends to get there asap.

second as moisture trap... I'm expecting condensation so I'd want the water to trickle down the walls, get channeled to a drain.. this is where I think the dry wall falls out of favor.. for an alternative I'm thinking a melamine ply board..its supposed to be fire resistant too?

Suggestions and constructive criticism are welcome!

PS I dont want to use any material that is a fire hazard or will cause the fire marshal to go ballistic. My first choice was expanded foam insulation sheet but the code says if its used anywhere in the building it must be enclosed inside a drywall.

I used this in both the fish room and the filter shed.

That's what I did. Although I do not plan to have as much condensation on my walls as what you have described. But one would think if you create a solid enough barrier with the paint you should be safe.

Just looked in the back (I keep my leftover paint back there). I don't have any left. But I do have a couple chunks of sheetrock left over. If you want to grab a chunk and get a small can of the paint you can do some testing to see if gives you the protection you're looking for.

The reason I'm expecting condensation is, everyday esp in winter about 5-8 gallons evaporates.. depends on how dry/cold the outside air is. since warm air needs to cool down/lose steam it will have to condense.

My guess is with the setup being enclosed the rate of evaporation should go down, by how much? I dont know..

Original plan was to have a fan circulate the air inside and this movement will cause air exchange. I intend to leave the bottom 12" open to allow the room to breathe.

Yeah it was a big concern of mine as well, that's why I went with the mold/mildew resistant paint. I wish I had actual experience with it to share.

Here is the Lowes link about $25.00 a gallon

Saw this one after almost a month... never saw it swimming in open waters before... must have been depressed with no company.. I kept an eye on it for almost 3 hours.. well 2 days later it was nice n crispy

Bye bye

Look into a mold resistant sheetrock, green board or purple rock. Then pick up some FRP. Its comes it 4x8 sheets, Glue it to the rock. Can cut it with a utility knife on the back, then snap it. Use this stuff all the time in showers or in wet areas of restaurants, they have corners and edges to seam the sheets together. Use it on the walls and the ceilings. As a safety measure could use some poly behind the rock to help keep moisture in. But now with all this moisture if there is no vent to the outside or some sort of air to air exchange i would be concerned with surface mold.

FRP = Fiber reinforced plastic? I've been looking into that also but trying to keep costs down as much as practical...esp since its not lifeline critical.

right now it appears that green board plus mold resistant paint is cheaper.

I'm also looking into one more option...it will be a lot cleaner and easy to clean. waiting to hear back from a CL post.

LOL I am not sure what happened, I was working on the tank tidying things up and then there's smell of burning hair. First reaction... take both hands not caring if they're caked in kalkwasser slurry and check the top of your head :rotflmao:

Then I went sniff sniff sniff sniff to find the source... well somehow from somewhere a drop or two of saltwater made it to the apex head unit still unsure how that happened.. but that's how a burning apex smells like.. burnt hair.

Crazy as I am, 2013 was not going to be different.. opened it up and did a quick check... everything looked ok, cleaned up the saltwater and hooked it right back. as far as I can tell no damage except for a the pins on a variable speed jack lost their shine but still work. the entire setup works. things happen when you're not watching.. sigh

LOL! Sounds like an interesting day off, never a dull moment in this hobby!! Glad you didn't fry the apex, crossing my fingers for you!

continuing with the spirit- more DIY! take a good long look at the pic and shoot holes in it.. I want to know why it wont work or what is wrong with it.

The magnet - Tunze 6045 magnets, I had them lying around otherwise I swear I would DIY that too :kackle:
The floats -Total of four, from top to bottom 1 being top and 4 being bottom. 2 and 3 are hooked to a relay. 3 is the ATO level (cant really see the float in the pic but its there), 2 is backup for 2.
1 & 4 floats will connect to a break out box, 1 is backup for 2.. switch everything off .. not really :) just cut the power completely to the ATO and send an alarm.
4 is low water, send alarm and cut power to return pump.

Will 1 have issues with it being so close to the magnet?
If something looks really wrong or I need more floats.. I am armed and ready ;)

If the corals are good, so the HA should be pretty too

ATS blah blah blah, ever seen an ATS at 4.5 weeks? I did not.... until now -

Side A

Side B
IMG_0546_zpsc1911f62.jpg

Notice one thing on both sides.. really bald spots.. some of the spots were clean.. nothing on the plastic at all. at some point past the 2.5-3 weeks stage the algae started to die and seems went fast. however it appears new algae was making a come back where the old had died AFTER the old was completely gone.

some close ups of the rotting algae, it also appears at some point the ATS had become a detritus trap as I never detritus in there before

There was easily more than 6cups of harvest. the entire screen cleaned off rather too easily.. it almost appeared the side A had nothing to do with side B

The body of the ATS sprung a leak.. time for a new body.. the next version has been due anyway

Obituaries -

Bugger never was good at posing for the camera... I'm guessing natural death as it he/she was the tanks boss for a while and had been in my tanks for almost 3yrs, not sure how long in the previous owners tank.

Favorites among corals for me, there's still life left but for now the colony is gone. guessing a freak accident.. change in tides + a innoucous nudge by a fast swimmer -
