16ANA 240G starfire mixed reef (1 Viewer)

get your Mag up a little higher, aroudn 1300-1350 is where i try to keep mine.

I've been down that street before... done the 1400+ thing... don't see an advantage to keeping it higher than whats found in near sea level type measurements.. I'm guessing the NSW is an average for numbers across the several reefs across the world

I think bumping up your mag would allow you to bump up you Alk without it falling out of the solution, I thought I read that somewhere that mag does have a direct effect on the amount of Alk that can be absorbed. Maybe what the cloudiness was from? JMO! But then again, what do I know!! I've only been in the hobby for <1 year!

The cloudiness was what is normally referred to as a snow storm in a reef tank.... calcium carbonate falling out of solution; what happened was I broke the delicate balance between calcium and alk, normally happens when calcium is above what can be held in solution.. usually 500ppm

I be will reducing the dose of Calcium from the two part setup to bring calcium down and then let the alk settle before trying to bump it up; i will test again in two weeks

It appears that the sump is the source of new undiscovered life, look what i found, one more macro-algae.. looks like grape caluerpa? At this time its only a guess where these are popping up from... since the last 2-3 years the only macro algae in my system was chaeto, so likely introduced on some frag plugs that came with a few frags I acquired over the last 2-4 months.

I'm not necessarily viewing this as bad or doom... its a rooted macro algae so will be easy to take off.. no toothbrush samurai job needed. right now there is no fish in the sump so its unknown if any of if it is good fish food.
also if the ATS at some point gets right sized and does its job the macro algae should auto perish.

Fwiw my tangs love grape caulerpa.

I think its time I talk to my tangs and remind them they are herbivores :jester:

Since 90ct is taking so long to post pics, I will post one to inspire him... wysiwyg lol

this one has been in hiding for the last 4-5 days, finally brave enough to show itself

Not a lot to update, except that the anthias are one mean fish, not that I didnt know but never saw it in person before. There has been a steady loss of Anthias, Amazing how they gang up against one and just go for it until its dead. Amazing how they dont know one of them could be next... sigh

The calcium reactor has been offline, for some reason the Ph probe does not hold caliberation, its the second new one in less than two months.. still havent figured out what the issue is

Manish,

clear out some room in your in box.

But to answer your question. Yes the 6000 pucks came in yesterday and they seem to be working well. But maybe we can work out a trade for something else. Do you have an old fluid reactor laying around you're not using?

Anthias - I think they have sorted their pecking order out for now... I certainly hope so. total loss of 4. if there is a next time I certainly hope these are also offered captive bred.

Calcium reactor - CO2 is still offline... have tried caliberating the probe once more with same results.. the PM1 is working fine... the only thing to check is some EMF interference.. one of these nights I will try to figure that out.

The ATS isn't cutting it in my setup anymore so I've reluctantly graduated from vinegar to Vodka; the ATS will still remain in the setup and continue to do as much as it possibly can until I get to building a larger ATS with some mods.

Finally moved some SPS frags to the display that have been in the frag tank for way tooooo long. The hippo got right to work. this is the second hippo that is territorial about whats placed in the tank. its funny to watch how casually it will swim upto the frag and bump it

since I had my arms wet to the armpits... decided to declare war on the aiptasia.. loaded the canon with Kalk paste and started nuking every one of the 'em that I could get to... looks better, for now :kackle:

while waiting to restart the powerheads I clicked some pics. All auto settings.. no alterations or post processing. but I guess I need a lesson or two in fine photography.

This fish has loads of personality, I guess another fish that I'd like to see offered CB. doesnt matter if the lights are on or out... it works by an internal clock.. goes to its "room" and rests for the night.. like clockwork

hopefully tonight I will get sometime to siphon off some gunk that I let accumulate for more time than it should. A water change is also overdue.. its almost 3 months now since the last change.. the new SW has been ready to go for more than 10 days now.. but there are other things to do first, aint that the truth? :) maybe tonight!

One of my DIY projects on the backburner has been this -

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1483439

anyone with DIY experience on the club? or anyone who wants one? I'm looking to make it strong enough to hold Tunze 620x pumps. If there is company I will work with your schedule. but I want this in a hurry now - why now you ask? with SPS colonies filling in I'm seeing that even all the flow is not cutting it... there are dead spots inside and in between the large colonies, aiming a power head works, but that also kills the coral pretty much or atleast stunts the growth very significantly.

Vortech mp40W has been tried and I found it lacking for this application, tunze does a better job. MP60W maybe better, cant tell without using, but for the cost of 2 mp60's I can get 6 large tunze pumps or 8-10 large koralias for way too much flow in the tank.

I guess this is figured out finally.. something with a float switch.. not sure why it did not correct the last time I tested this.

Are you taking down the freshwater or something? I really miss having a fresh water tank some days. It was soo much easier, lol!
