75 gallon tank - New to Saltwater (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I'm going to use the 29 gallon for the sump unless I can find a 30 long. Do you have a pic of your sump? I want a sump and refugium but I'm not sure if there is enough room for both.

You can have a section baffled off in your sump that you could use as a refugium. You dont need to have two different tanks (one for sump, on for refugium), you could definately do that, but you could also do it how I described.

Here's one with a 20Long that i am currently using,

And the 30Long that i will be using once i make the baffles.

Believe me , there is plenty.
Here is a thread of my build (which still needs to be updated BTW I will probably do that later today) but I went over what I did, why I did it, and what I learned in the process, it may be helpful to you. I have a few pics of my sump in the thread.

Well, I finished the stand yesterday, just have to attach the doors. I will take some pictures of it soon, but its nothing special.

To Do:

Baffles for 29 gallon sump.
Set up QT Tank
Plumb sump
Get sand/live sand and dry/live rock.

Start cycling both the qt and the dt.

Question: How do you keep a qt tank running when you don't have anything in it? Like after I have the fish in my dt.

i usually keep couple floss filters in my DT fuge and when i get new fish, i take hte floss and throw it into the QT and fill it with DT water. Your QT then is already cycled and ready to go.

i usually empty qt btw fishes so i dont transfer anything.

Does the back have a center brace? If not, how do you expect to get your sump in place? An even better idea would be to double brace the front top header, and make the front center brace easily removable so if you ever have to do an emergency sump swap, all you have to do is remove a few screws, pop the center brace out, and remove the sump. Plan for the worst, hope for the best! :beerchug:

The back will have a center brace once I get the sump put in, it is cut to size and has brackets that screw into the stand. The front center piece is removable and not structural, so I can take the sump out in the future. The front top piece is a 2x6 and the rest is 2x4. More than strong enough.

I thought ahead...;)

Good stuff, also, plan for keeping corals and other things, plan for expanding your skimmer, upping your return pump and putting in beast lights...you may never need too...but then again...;)

I'm trying to plan ahead without spending a fortune where I don't need to. Most of the stuff I'm getting is used. I will hopefully be getting a 30 gallon long sump by next week then I will start on the plumbing and the canopy.

I think I am going to go with a DIY LED setup next spring sometime and will just use the lights that I currently have

I just got a RKL from a member on here. I'm trying to get a majority of things I need before I start the setup. I still need a heater to use with the RKL but have a question. If I use the RKL for temp monitor, should I use one heater or two? I'm not sure how 2 heaters work with a controller.

You can power and control both heaters with the RKL if thats what you want. You can have one turn on say if the temp falls below 78, the other one turn on when the temp falls below 77.5, and you can have them both turn off if the temp gets above 78.5, or something like that.

You also could buy a BIG heater (350-400w) for the main heater, and then the secondary heater could be smaller (200-300w)

Using your example, the big heater would be for if the temp falls below 78 and the small for if it falls below 77.5?

I have not looked into all the capabilities of the RKL so I wasn't sure but that makes sense. thanks.

What brand heater do you guys recommend? I'm thinking titanium heater. BRS has a Finnex brand??

Yes, that is how I meant it.

I'm actually not quite sure if you can run two heaters on the RKL, just concerning how many amps are being pulled. But i'm sure someone has the answer around here.

Finnex - I've heard great things - No experience though.

I really like my heater, its an Aqueon Pro which is made of shatter-proof plastic, and has a nice temp control on top.

I think that's the heater I have on my cichlid tank but not sure. I had a marineland stealth but it was recalled and I got similar replacement of a different brand but can't remember.

All I know is that I am not going to get a glass one. I have not had any luck with those in the past.

I think for now I will run one big heater and keep a cheaper one on hand in case the other goes out. Maybe someone will chime in on the RKL with 2 heaters.....

Jager heaters are highly recommended by many, I use one in both my salwar and my goldfish tank, they are glass, but if it's in your sump that shouldn't be a problem.

I run two heaters and lights on my RKL, as for the heaters i think you need to run them on outlets 1 and 4 because of the amps but not 100% sure off the top of my head.

I had asked earlier about re-doing the silicone.

Here are some pictures of the bad areas. Should I replace the silicone? If so can I just replace the portions that are bad or do I have to redo the whole tank?

It is basically the front two corners that are bad. The rest are fine. Looking for advice... thanks

I did the same on mine. Just cut it out with a razor blade and re-silicone the entire corner, you don't have to do the entire tank. But make sure you clean it well.
