The carbon isn't exhausted per say it's just gunked up from larger debris. Sponge pads help keep the carbon from moving and crumbling but it doesn't really act as a prefilter for the large gunk. Plus it's disposable toss it all out at the same time. I personally wouldn't try to go longer than 2 weeks regardless.

I'd personally would still combine them but just use less gfo since you are changing more frequently. So if you used 1 cup and wanted to change it out every month then just use .25 cups and change out weekly. Rox .8 carbon is good stuff a little goes a long way, if you using more than 1/4 cup at a time for your tank then your wasting carbon. Capacity still stays the same and its really better for your tank to do less and change more frequently for stability/consistancy.

I have been totally wasting media then - lets chat about this more at my meeting please

Thank you DG

Current tank shot - did some repositioning of the rock around the center of the tank by rasing the bridge rock higher with another rock.

Still battling high nitrates - a buddy had this just sitting around his house and offered it to me to try so this is my next step in the battle (thank you sir!):

I hope you have better luck with the bio pellets than I'm having... Downside is the time they take to do anything. I started bio pellets on my 180 same time started ats on 75, both had terribly high nitrates. By the end of 1 month ats Dropped 40ppm bio pellets have only dropped 10 ppm. Currently in the process of getting ats running on 180.

DAMMIT - I dont have any room for an ATS ugh, fml

I feel ya there, my new one will have to go outside the stand on the 180 unless I make a new sump and/or get a smaller skimmer. I just look at it as worse to look at but easier to maintain.
