It split 1 week after I picked it up.

I wont be looking to rehome any of the splits until I have at least 5 - so in love with this nem!

It is THAT awesome- thanks Jason - wanted to make sure I got a beauty for a nem back in my tank and this has not disappointed!

So the struggle continues.

I have been battling this for the last couple weeks now (No, I haven't tried the Ultra Slime remover yet DG).

I have been sucking the patches off the top of sand and rocks with a hose run through a filter sock every couple days to try to keep up with it.

Have an SWC Xtreme 160 skimmer running on the system and installing a UV this week.

Also want to get a cheato ball rolling in the sump to help export nutrients (anyone close have some to share)?

I had the feeder going off 3 times daily with two revolutions on the first and last feeding. I have changed it to feed 4 times daily (1 revolution each time).

I have a school of voracious Chromis along with pair of clowns, pair of Randalls Goby's and a McKoskers Flasher so I need to have feedings throughout the day.

If this is still going on mid March - I will try the slime remover

Marty... Any advice for those that practice heavy feedings?


Do you think you need to feed that much daily?
Even with all of the fish in my system, I tend to feed "sparingly".
During the week, I only feed during a 4PM to 8PM window when I am home at night. On the weekends, I begin at 10AM and feed a little bit throughout the day, but not really much more than what they receive daily. On the busiest of days, they may not get fed at all. But my fish are not starving; to say the least.
I mainly feed LRS frozen foods; with some Reef Nutrition foods thrown in periodically. And I watch to make sure that all of the food is eaten; which doesn't take very long. With the frenzy that ensues when I feed, I have the most concern with my Randall's Goby getting enough food; as it will not venture too far away from the pistol shrimp. But the goby is thick and healthy, so it must be eating enough.

So if you think you're issue is nutrient based from feeding the fish, try cutting back again.

And I think I may have a bottle of the Red Slime Remover; possibly... maybe.

Yea, don't tell anyone how much you feed as they will make fun of you at dinner. :)

First and foremost, you tank is under 6 moms old right? It's going to go through various algea cycles, new tanks are hell like that. I think this is one of the few universally agreeable facts of the hobby. Thanks, and I'm sexy.

I can't belive folks use that slime remover but what do I know. I think I read Chris uses it, my jaw dropped when I read that. I'm inferring from what Angie posted DG uses it too. Again, what do I know maybe I should use it too.

Yes, for the fish you have, your feeding likely too much actually. I'd say don't feed less, just get more fish. Keep up on the physically removal, let the tank age and cycle. Crabs are always good (not the kinda I saw you at the doctors office at thou).

It works wonders. I even sprinkle it on my toast in the morning.

I only recommend if everything else looks to be in order, otherwise it's kind of "treating the symptom."
 
I had a school of 7 chromis in my 180 that lived for 5+ years on 1 feeding a day. There were lots of pods, etc. for them, so they may have had more to eat than my meager offereings, but I personally think you are worrying too much about feeding them. Once they are established you can cut the feedings down a bit. I would suggest very light feedings twice a day, and a full one at night. I think they do need food during the day, but not a ton of it. Just a light snack here and there. FWIW.
 
I'm planning on picking up some Nassarius snails and an emeralrd crab - hopefully that will help.

Jason is gonna hook me up with his leftover slime remover so I will have it on hand if it comes to that

Agreed Marty (OMG!!!) - still thinking this is growing pains more than anything so soldiering on with the battle
 
Added the 9w JBJ uv to the sump tonight - this thing kicks out some serious flow!

After siphoning off a lot of the cyano off the sand bed earlier this week - I haven't noticed it coming back as quick as it normally has over the last couple weeks.

Hopefully a good sign that this is growing pains of a new tank.

Struggle continues.....
 
For about a month I had thrown a tiny Koralia in the tank pointing at the sand behind the rockwork in the back of the tank. So tiny - I couldnt feel the flow 5 inches from it - my thought was I didnt want a PH in the tank but at least it was something to move the flow in dead areas.

Took it out last week - nothing really changed other than now I dont have to worry about nem suicide.

I have been cleaning the skimmer cup daily (used to clean 3 times a week) and turned off the sump light. Still chalking this up to new tank syndrome. Cyano is still no where near what it was so hoping I am on the way out of this.

Heading to SWE tomorrow to pick up some nessarius snails and an Emerald or two for the bubble algea I have found this week - anyone wanna meet to chat and hang - should be there around 3-4p

Still looking for a 2nd AI Vega to add to the system

Red Slime Remover is on its way. Should be there today.
Would love to chat but we're headed up to Superior for the day.
 
So Saturday I added an MJ600 - the result helped but still had cyano/red slime all over the place. Fish and corals seem to appreciate the extra flow - just hate having it in the tank since I am paranoid about the nem's moving and have seen one go into an MJ before. Thus far, nems are happy in the middle of the tank so I am going to have to find an MP10 to add as they are much safer due to foam covers and also - if the head comes loose, it shuts off rather than dropping into the sand and creating a sand storm (happened to Sanjay this week).

I would have waited a couple months to see if the tank was just having new tank syndrome issue's but since Jason sent me some UltraLife Slime remover (Thanks dude - ill owe ya some raffle tickets at the Spring Expo fo sho) - I bit the bullet and started a treatment tonight after I nuked some Aiptasia.

Currently have an airstone in the sump, left my UV and skimmer on. I'm watching the skimmer and readjusting here and there....all fish and corals are good.

This is scary - never used it before - fingers crossed all goes well

A little tip with the maxijets to get you by until you get your mp10 (have been using them in freshwater tanks for a few years), go to home depot and pick up some of these to replace the stock suction cups with. Haven't had one let go with these cups yet. Obviously remove the metal hook, then insert where suction cups go.

Thanks - excellent tip! Someone also suggested magnets- will do one or the other in the meantime!

Also forgot to note that I added 8 LARGE Nassarius snails and an Emerald on Saturday - not that they have helped but......
 
I too think you just have the "new tank uglies" All of this stuff will come and go after a few months. Constantly fighting this stuff is just raising your blood pressure.

Agreed - big time Eric

I just turned of the airstone- the skimmer and UV are producing enough air bubbles but the Aiptasia X recommends running the skimmer (while monitoring and modifying the skimmer output) as well as an airstone - they done recommended more than needed. I am honestly looking forward to what the tank will look like in the next 24-48 hours
 
Angie, you might be dealing with dinos, do that stuff grow extremely fast when the lights are on?

If they are dinos, you have a really battle at hand. You will need to lights out for 2-3 days,4raise your PH and dose peroxide.

I did this and it got rid of the for over a month but now they are back and I am lights out again...
