Avert Your Eyes! (1 Viewer)

Hooray! Excited it lived on. Super cool you've got purple tips out of it. They were always red for me.

Can you give some background on your systems and lighting , your pictures are amazing .

I'm still running T-5's exclusively on all of my tanks. I had run LED for a while but wasn't happy with the results. I'm considering trying one of the new generation systems again as I'm seeing a little better results in other's tanks. For pictures, the real secret to good photos is a steady hand and an SLR that you can manipulate F-stop, shutter speed, and focus very precisely and of course having the ability to adjust White Balance to get rid of some of the blue dominant in our tanks. My pictures have continued to improve over the years and I cringe at some of the old pictures I was proud of at the time, but that's normal. I rarely get the "money shot" in one take, and usually take several pictures of each coral and select for the best clarity, lighting, depth of field, etc.

Right now I have a few tanks going, as does Josh. Here are a few quick shots of my tanks.

120g Zoa Dominated--Courtesy Benihana. Running since early 2012-ish. It's undergone a few iterations.
ATI Sunpower. 6x 54w.

Zach, do you have a favorite macro lens that you use?

My favorite is the one that I have and use. I've got a 30 year old manual 105mm Nikon lens. No auto nothin'. Picked it up off ebay for like $80 bucks or something. I do all my coral photography with it on my D200 SLR, which is now getting close to 10 years old. Photobox from Melev's Reef really makes life easier. I would like to invest in a new Nikon 105mm, but I always find something else that needs my money and never seem to have the grand for one sitting around when I need it.

What kind of lighting do you have over your chalices?

I'm all T-5 right now. Looking at doing an LED lit softy tank, just to try it out. Still not sold on them being a well-rounded light. Generally I run a mix of Blue+, 10K, and actinic, maybe a fiji purple thrown in.

OMG. RIDICULOUS. What a show. This is why I love this hobby. How can you not enjoy the beauty of the ocean. Geez.

What is the name for the 1st and 2nd Zoa?

The first were originally imported and sold at Darth Maul variants, which they are, and I used to sell them as Watermelon Darth Mauls. They later got dubbed by a vendor as Red Spackles. I think that name sucks, and since that vendor is now gone and there are so many different darth mauls out there, I'm re-branding them for myself as Dark Phoenix palys. They were very popular at one time, and then seem to have all but disappeared from the hobby over the last couple years, but now with the popularity of the similar Krakatoa paly, they've suddenly popped back up in a few places, though they're still hard to come by now.

The second ones are Tyree Orange Rainbows. No special story on those, but they are nice for sure.
