What if I use Fleet Farm or Home Depot 5 gallon buckets? Is there any reason to buy the white jugs with screw on caps, aside from being easier (screw on cap versus snap on bucket lid)? Ive seen those white jugs at most LFS but they usually want $12.99 for them. They are a helluva lot cheaper!?

Check Fleet Farm again, they have those same drinking water 5 gal containers there with the caps, I think for $9.99. Think they are near automotive near the oil and use to be in camping/outdoor/sporting goods area

I've also used collapsable water containers intended for camping, they're under $10 even at rei. The 5 gal buckets should work fine, they're just unwieldy and a p.i.t.a. to remove and reattach the lids each time. Plus the menards lids especially have a tendency to fly off when a full bucket is knocked on its side. I haven't used the fleetfarm ones and the hd variety are good when the lid is firmly secured, but trust me, 5 gallons of water is a lot more than you want in your trunk or back seat.

Fleet Farm carries the 7 gallon Reliance Aqua-trainers for 14.99. And occasionally they go on sale.

OK, just came back from FF, and they have 4.5 gallon potable water jugs for 6.99 each. They are near the gas containers near the back of the store near where the mobile 1 oil is.

Go with a container that has a screw on cap and can have a spout of some kind.

I use those white 5gal containers for making up my kalkwasser.
Fill with RODI, add kalk, screw on lid, shake and settle, add spout and pour into ATO reservoir.
Very quick, clean and easy.

Walmart has the 6.5 gallon reliance blue containers with spigots for about $14.00. Those are my primary water containers. Sometimes they go on sale but not very often.

I agree that you don't want to use 5 gallon buckets because they are to easy to slosh water around/spill. You can get a lid remover for them at some hardware stores or home brew supply stores. Even if you have to pay extra for the containers it is a one time purchase and they last forever.

If you guys look next to the buckets in Menard home Depot, etc they have snap on lids for a couple bucks. And I mean they snap on tight.

+1 with a caveat. I have yet to find a way to remove these lids with out cracking it in at least 1 location. Meaning: they seal tightly with a gasket, but they are so tight that removing the lid also cracks the lid.

With that said, I have still used the cracked lids to successfully move water with no spills even in the trunk and seat of my car. the edge is still sealed and whatever water sloshes up through a crack on the top is caught and retained on top of the bucket. I can get some pictures to show the kind of cracking I am talking about if thats helpful for anyone

Flat blade screw driver. Pry gently around the cap and you shouldn't ever have that issue. I'm used to the old 5 gallon buckets of instant ocean. Used to break finger nails off trying to remove those lids.

Maybe we should have asked what size and purpose you are using the containers for.

If you're using them to hold RODI water or make kalkwasser, go with the white containers with a cap and spout.
If you're mixing small batches of saltwater, go with the bucket.
If you're mixing medium sized batches of saltwater, go with a Rubbermaid storage tote and lid. Much cheaper for more volume.
If you're mixing larger sized batches of saltwater, go with the grey Brute trash cans. If you need to move these around, pick up the dolly. These even are available in smaller sizes also. Highly recommend.
I have used/am using all of these options with my water storage needs.

Check out other sources for the containers if cost is prohibitive.
Sometimes used ones show up for sale rather cheap.

I ended up buying the white containers that I see at LFS. I got them at Fleet Farm for $6.99! The are the EXACT same thing! Thanks to all who helped me in this thread. Semper FI!
