I have a really really sick fish that is not making a recovery after weeks of dosing medications. I came home from work today and it is worse then when I left. The other eye now has pop eye, one of its fins is completely gone. If I had to, what would the best way be to put an end to its suffering? It breaks my heart to see it finless and blind. It can barely find food to eat.

Put it in a freezer bag, place it in freezer. Gradually slows body functions until it dies. Lowest pain and easiest cleanup.

Sorry to hear about the sick fish.

freezing an animal is not pain free. animal suffocates before it freezes, might as well just leave it in an empty bucket.

the best way is to use something to put it to sleep, and use alcohol to finish it off. more info can be found using google.

honestly the best way is just to throw it at a solid object, such as a concrete floor. if you don't hesitate, it'll be quick and painless.

Ruthless, Chad. Just ruthless. But i have heard this. Long time ago it was true that freezing it was thought to be painless, but i lowers O2 concentration before it ever gets cold enough to euthanize the fish.

It's barbaric, but if you take a knife behind it's gill, and sever it's spine it will die quickly.

Hammer, chopping board, plastic bag.

Sounds bad, but it's better than the freezer.

Oh ya. put it IN the bag before hitting with a hammer ;)

actually. have you tried a fresh water dip? Many times it'll kill what ever is infecting the fish.

Or the fish ;) 5-10 minutes tops. match ph and temp.

If it was me, I would use eugenol (clove oil) in a high dose so that the fish just "falls asleep" and dies under anesthesia.

Wrong.

Best way to euthanize a fish is with Clove Oil.
dingoballs is right. He also has an awesome name, I might add.

Completely pain-free way for the fish to go.

Firstly, move the fish into a smaller tank, a baby bath or bucket - something that can be thrown away or easily cleaned.
Put 3 drops with a half pint of water and shake very well, so the oil and water make a fusion - otherwise the oil will just float on top of the water and for the euthanasia to work the fish has to get the oil into its system.
Add the mixture to the water that the fish is in (1 gallon of water should be more than enough) and stir it around slowly with your hand. The fish should become lethargic and sleepy.
Add another mixture of 2 to 3 drops of oil in water. When the fish goes "belly up" it is asleep - not dead.
Then add 3 more drops of clove oil. The fish feels nothing, it is very peaceful and humane. It seems mad that a few drops of something can have such an effect, but it IS very strong. Don't make the mistake of thinking that if you initially put more in it will act quicker - it will only freak the fish out - it has to be done gradually so the fish doesn't notice the change in the water.

The whole proceedure should take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. You will know when the fish is completely dead because there will be absolutely no movement of the gills. If after an hour the fishes gills are still moving you could add a couple more drops of clove oil. Sometimes it does depend on the size of the fish to how many drops of clove oil are needed.

yeah, that's what I was trying to get at, just couldn't remember the type of oil used.

I read that using alcohol to finish it off is best.
