Recently I have noticed a opaque almost slimy looking film on my live rock. It is not on corals, just the rock. I run chemipure in a reactor. From what I can gather running this carbon all the time is causing this problem. Is this the case, I'm not sure I fully understand what is going on. The film is about an 1/8 inch tall, evenly coated and does not come off with a turkey baster. I found even a toothbrush rakes quite a bit of effort to remove it. I tried to get a picture but it is hard to get a clear shot, seeing as it is almost clear. Any help would be appreciated. At this time I gave removed the reactor.

Are there tiny gas bubbles suspended in the film?

Also; what makes you remove the reactor? I would make sure you have confidence prior to altering your setup.
 
Sorry my mind is blank as to what your referring/decribing could be.

How long do you leave your carbon ? Are you replacing it every week or two max. Only thing I can possibily think of would be your leaving it in to long and growing cultures of something on the carbon that then multiplies and host on the rock. But if that were the case, it shouldn't be easily removed or go away after a while.

The chemi pure and reactor have been a new addition. It has been on tank for roughly a month. Also there are no bubbles. Removing the reactor is no big deal. Don't have any issues other than using it to polish the water.
 
Did you change out the carbon in that months time or just left it run. Carbon gets clogged and become pretty worthless in a short amount of time. If you not changing every week or so then that may be more the cause then just the fact it is carbon.

I myself have never been a believer in the chemi-pure product. Mostly just marketing sales pitch to get $$ from your pocket at a premium. The ROX carbon from BRS is the best quality you can get. Coupled with some GFO, I can't imagine any product such as chemi-pure to be able to beat it both in quality and performance.

Yes I have been running the chemi for the whole time. I do have BRS carbon and GFO on hand. If I understand you correctly you think it could be a bacteria, and yes it would be hard to remove?
 
No clue really. Just guessing.

If your leaving it in too long it for sure could be culturing something though and would be my only guess. That is going on your assumption that there is a direct correlation between media and the coating.
 
I think any picture you can take may help us out a bit. Even if it's a bad pic, could help.

Yes it is an assumption. I did research last night and had alot of trouble finding answers. I correlate the two, only because I did not have it prior to the introduction of this system and media. It could very well not be my problem. Hence the reason I am here looking for feed back.

I'd have to see this in person, and maybe put some under a microscope, to be able to take a good guess at what this is.

Is this on all of your rock surfaces or just some rocks?

More importantly, does it seem to be harming anything in your tank otherwise? It might not be worth worrying about at all.

It is on most pieces of rock. I'd does not seem to be on corals. Feel free to check it out. I have not been able to find any photos matching what I have.
 
I had trouble with a clear slim like bacteria and linked it to my use of vodka dosing. Soon after I discontinued the vodka it went away.
 
New horrible update! My torch coral is falling apart before my eyes. Pieces of the torch are floating allover the tank. My acan is also showing white tissue receding from it's fragged side. Now I am getting a little worried.
