I would be suprised if 80F would have caused the damage shown, I used to keep my tanks at 80F all summer lon with no problems. Only when I went over 82 would I get worried.

I don't have fancy named corals but anything I have your welcome take clippings of to help fill it back up if you decide to give it another shot ( when the time is right ).

I am assuming at this point that most of the losses were caused by the copper, Jen at new wave mentioned something about a client having a wet side of a mp40 split open and leach metals into the tank, upon research it doesn't look like any of ecotech pumps contain copper so I don't think that is my issue although I figured why not pull the pumps and check

One of my mp40 wet sides, I believe this one to be less than 2 years old although it is hard to keep track as they all look the same and get swapped when cleaning

My vectra l1

The bludge at the bottom doesn't look normal to me but I have an email into ecotech to see if either of these items are of concern to me.

As far as right now I am going to let the tank sit and see if I can figure out where the copper is coming from, I'm guessing I will have to remove all rockwork in the display and sump and scrap it as it probably soaked up the copper and will leach it in the long run.

I am not going to truely get out of the hobby but I might downsize for the time being and maintain until we move to the new house. That is still up in the air.

Thank you for the help and offer to restock when ready, I appreciate it.

One more question about sps, my purple stylo is white and growing algae but I can see the polyps or what looks like purple polyps receded inside. Is this just me being hopeful or should I pull that as well?

Have you tested for copper? send in an ICP or Triton sample and see what it shows.

Good call, I will fill up the vials and send it in tommorow! Have two of the triton tests at home waiting to be used anyways

Brent, the recent experience you had looks very similar to one I went through a month or so ago. I traced my tanks decline to an exploded frag rack magnet that I couldn't find until I tore my tank apart. Be sure you check everything, heaters, impellers, screws... Its possible that copper from your job got into your tank but I'm pretty skeptical- more likely from current tank equipment. It took a couple weeks and a couple large water changes but my tank is now back and SPS are happy again.

As far as your Ecotech wetside, I had a couple like that. I called ecotech, they had me send photos and serial numbers and then sent me new wetsides at no charge.

Interested to hear about your Triton results. Let me know if there is anything I can help with!

Know you have a lot on your plate right now but I'd hate to see that beautiful tank sit empty even for a little while!

!

This is very interesting.. Was this still in warranty or no? Cause my mp10 wetside looks like that.

I do not believe my wetsides were under warranty. I can't say for sure though, I have a number of them and the serial numbers I gave Ecotech may have been under warranty.

I will make sure to find some time to check all of the magnets this weekend, one more week! And then it should all calm down :) I'm glad to hear yours is bouncing back for you.

Ecotech did replace my wet side and sent me out a new vectra pump for free both were still in warranty according to them. They did say that there is no way that either of their pumps could cause copper to be in the tank since they don't make anything in them with copper which seems hard to believe.

Triton should receive my sample Monday as I heard that they shipped it over to them Thursday so hopefully I hear back sooner than later.

Cu seems extremely concerning as right now and when I took that water sample I am running about 8 cups of carbon changes out weekly and have 10 8x4 poly filter pads in my sump hoping to suck out the copper and it is still that high

Why not use Triton Detox? I know it is rather spendy but from what i read i hear it works.

Re organized the tank today, finally got around to cleaning out all of the death after the wedding. Not great but looks loads better than what if did look like when I took out all of the sps skeletons.

Strange thing about the vectra pump, most likely anecdotal but still suspicious. copper levels remained the same no matter what I put in the tank to try to take them out, purigen, poly filter pads, loads of carbon.

As soon as I switched out the return pump the levels dropped 10ppm in 1 day and are now almost non existent.

Ecotech assures me that there is no possible way their pump caused any copper to enter the tank as it doesn't contain any copper

Either way things are on the rebound and now that the wedding planning and saving is over I can place more focus on getting the tank back on track!

once i get my levels back in check, how long should i wait until i start stocking the tank with sps again? flounders frag packs are extremely tempting. i plan on doing 2 60 gallon water changes this weekend to help with this as pulling all the sps made my tank alk skyrocket. i should be able to get my dosing back on track after i zero everything out with my water change... everything has remained stable and i have no trace of copper that i can see in my tests. pretty sure that is due to the cuprisorb in my sump.. im going to send out another test to triton next week to be sure but i would love to be able to start seeing some of that sps color back in my tank.

i actually do have one of the metasorb pouches in the sump right now, it was recomended by jen at new wave along with the cuprisorb(not sure why i kept thinking it was purigen), i will be leaving both of those and a small chunk of poly filter pad to get a visual until i am confident that the copper is gone and i might keep the cuprisorb in the tank long term just incase something like this happens in the future since it seems like there is no downfall to keeping it in there.
