i actually do have one of the metasorb pouches in the sump right now, it was recomended by jen at new wave along with the cuprisorb(not sure why i kept thinking it was purigen), i will be leaving both of those and a small chunk of poly filter pad to get a visual until i am confident that the copper is gone and i might keep the cuprisorb in the tank long term just incase something like this happens in the future since it seems like there is no downfall to keeping it in there.
.....im not sure about that idea. I'd rather remove it from the aquarium. Keeping it in the tank doesn't remove it, it just contains it to one spot....

that makes sense, what if i were to regenerate or get a new supply of it? im very nervous about restocking to only have something like this happen again and wipe out my tank. where if i were to have something preventative in place it would start absorbing metals before they became an issue.

what does everyone else out there use for preventative measures?

+1 on removing the media.

I would not restock until you are confident the source of the problem has been eliminated and you'll never know for sure the source is gone while you are using Cu absorbing media.

I would remove the activated carbon and other chemical media and add 1 frag to act as a canary. After a few months media-free if the frag is growing and the water still tests 0 Cu, you can declare the problem solved and restock the tank.

If the Cu starts creeping back up once you remove the media, you need to keep looking for the source.

thanks for the advice! i will pull the media after my second water change this afternoon

Pulled the tank apart today and found this magnet that I had used to mount a montipora to the back wall

Looks like I will be pulling all of the other ones out as well just in case
