I just upgraded from the point and shoot world to dslr myself. I went with the new Canon rebel series with a 55-250 is lens. Be sure to get the image stabalizer. A good website and forum for canons is www.photography-on-the.net
they also have a for sale section similar to this site.

yeah, I put it out myself , in ground sprinklers....


btw, in the topic of image stabilization, not sure what this is worth to you (most people end up ignoring my sony-related info anyway) but all Sony DSLRs have built in image stabilization in the body of the camera. Its not QUITE as effective as the lens-based ones (very close though) but it could mean saving thousands of dollars on lenses in the long run . With my camera, ALL my lenses are image stabilized just by putting them on the camera. but, ultimately its up to you what camera gives you the most for your money
