im hoping to pick up a clam for my tank at the frag swap. my tank is 50 gallons and uses led lighting. I would like to put the clam in the sand if possible. Just wondering what kind of clam you think would go best with that size tank and lighting. thanks ahead of time.

I know Jay from Discovery Aquatics, table 9 will have quite a few clams, most are Maxima's, but he will have a few Deresa's as well, get a Deresa if you want a clam in the sand, Maxima's need to be on rock and need super high light, Deresa's do fine in the sand. Biggest deal with clamsis stable parameters, stable tank and keep a super cclose eye on cal and allas they tend to consume it qquicker than you think especially when they are small and growing!

clams are tricky...size matter as well as parameters...a 1.5-2" clam will struggle to get enough nutrients, their photosynthetic algae known as zooxanthellae ability is limited...suggest min 3" clam preferably larger...and theirs a greater success rate for someone who hasent had clams before.
personally I would put it on a rock to adhere to...bugs in the sand can infiltrate the mantle and may cause you problems in the future...JM2c

Maxima clams usually you want on the rock, others on the sandbed or a little rock structure on the sand. Bristleworms generally will annoy a clam enough to kill it if its on the sandbed.

Thanks guys. Picked up a gold maxima. In the sand right now to acclimate to lighting. If I move it onto a rock should it be a flat rock? Do I just set it there and it attaches itself?

I would have it attach to a small piece of rubble rock to make it easy to move, if needed.

I have been reading up on clams a lot as I got my first ones... one thing I did not come across before I got it though is the dangers of pinched mantle while running GFO. I have not ran any yet, but I usually do run the BRS GFO in a reactor. Is this a big no-no? I have read some people who say they had no problems at all, and others who have had problems. Any kind of scientific data backing this up to show it is in fact the GFO and not some other parameters in the people's tanks who did not have the best luck?
