I keep hearing a clicking noise in my sump and I have no idea what it is. I have a bunch of chaeto in there so its hard to see and detruitus builds up quickly so it can be difficult to search for the cause, other than that it is a bare bottom. No skimmer, just the return pump and heater for equipment.

Any ideas?

I thought of that and was looking to see if I had a hitchhiker that wound up in there but haven't been able to find anything yet, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what else it could be so I know what to look for.

And just to let you know, I can head this from across the room even when the tv is on.

I can hear my pistol on the 1st floor when he clicks - the tank is on the 2nd floor.

Are they random clicks?

Im betting on shrimp....shouldnt be a problem unless its a mantis big enough to shatter the sump. Since you cant find it readily, guessing its small enough not to cause any issues......?

Probably hiding in the cheato somewhere

how small could a mantis or pistol shrimp be? Its not that big of an area for me to search, only about 12" cube

I have seen some tiny shrimp. The fact that they are random and they stop when you get near the tank is what has me betting on the shrimp rathar than an equipment issue

Is you heater loose, or is it secured? If it's not secured, it could be the current knocking it into the side of the sump.

its secured and I just unplugged it then am hearing it click right now a few muinuites later. and its more of a small tick than a click, like something tapping on glass.

I am currently experience the same problem on my new sump. I am guessing is the pressure against the heater, but kudos to anyone who can solve the mystery sounds.

Throw a little copper in there and if the clicking stops, it was a pistol. If the clicking persists, try looking into the pump or heater, probably the pump.

:gay1: JUST KIDDING. NO COPPER!! I bet it's a shrimp too.

If you can only hear it from across the room.. and the noise stops when you get closer.. why do you think its coming from your sump only? and not the display?

:bln-confused:

Its not only when I'm across the room, I hear it when I'm right there too but it stops when I make noises or if the floor vibrates from me walking.

Pistol shrimp or malfunctioning pump?

Or maybe a pistol pump or malfunctioning shrimp? lol

(sorry, I couldn't resist.... malfunctioning shrimp sounded so silly!)

I had mantis once. The clicking drove me nuts. I did finally find him. Ended up throwing him in the garbage disposal. I figured it was a quick way to euthenize him.
