Many things still to figure out but the general gist of the build is there.... We are looking at a 6-8 month time frame before tank is ordered... Plenty of time to plan, discuss, and throw ideas against the wall

WOW... Impressive project. :beerchug:
Looking forward to see this build.
Hope you will document this with lots of pics...

and here I thought you were going to keep the project small:gay1:

Sounds like a fun one!!:beerchug:

Have you thought about an air exchanger in the room(s) it will be kept in?

Which one of you won the lottery?

You went from being out of the hobby, to the clubs smallest tank and now the largest. I don't know what to say about that.

That is a pretty ridiculous setup for inspiration. I cant wait to see it come together!!

I will also add, atm only net I have is the crackberry so pics will not happen yet, but rest assured once the tank is ordered there will be plenty of pics....

Ben- this is the tank I've been dreaming of for many many years, I went to visit my brother in washington years back and on my drive home I got the pleasure of seeing steves tank in person, ever since that day I knew I had to have one... I woulda been shot and strung up by my ankles in past relationships, when I brought this to beckys attn a week or so (maybe 2) ago she dint blink or bat an eye.... She smiled and said "YUP"! And that's when the serious planning begun...

This will be a fun project, but I know myself very well and it should be an interesting one as well, so kick back, make sure you have plenty of beverages and enjoy

Too bad that Steve's tank crashed and is no longer from what I have heard. :mad_3:

Ya know I think a lot of people mistook my goodbye thread as I was leaving the hobby, just taking a few months away from tcmas to focus on some family issues that arose...

There's a reason we sold all of the "larger" tanks.... And misc equipment.... They won't be needed... I could of sat around and waited to sell them... But why? We still have 3 tanks up and running...

As far as the lottery thing goes, there are ways to cut costs..... Pvc riser to stack rock upon so I don't need as much rock, brs dry rock with a few lbs of cherry picked live rock to seed, majority of sand will be silicate free playsand with a couple bags of ls to feed it.... T5s not mh for lighting,... A lot of biological filtration rather than mechanical filtration..... Will this be expensive? Yes no doubt about that....

Jimmy display at 24" high is about 550 gallons total system will be around 1100

72x72x24 should be around 540gals. Thats a large tank, I would just keep things as simple as possible. The more extra stuff you add the more problems that can happen. :beerchug:

Only playsand that I have heard is reef safe is Southdown play sand and dont believe its available in MN. Unless you have found a supplier for it. HD's carry it down south but wont ship up north. :(

Yeah, and that's the risk we all take.... Larger tanks are just on a much larger scale... And one of the reasons its going to be lps and softy dominated, much more forgiving.... So to speak... steves cold water and nps systems are both just as amazing

He has some amazing tanks! There is no doubt that his large reef at its prime was stunning. The crash I think really set him back but rumor has it hes going to be doing a new one. Not sure on that though since that was a long time ago.

I agree all you should really need is a good skimmer, lots of LR, Sand, and it should maintain itself. Dont dose anything that is not needed. I would be up for a road trip! ;)

I might be going to NC in December so I might see if i can get some then. :beerchug:

no NPS corals? I think with a few modifications to your system, you'd be able to support some interesting corals.
Livestock-

3 flame angels
10 firefish
2 candy basslets
1 yellow boxfish
some fish I'd concider, more angels (regal, gold, Genicanthus Sp.), deepwater anthias, orchid dottybacks, cardinals (banggai, red belted, red spot), pipefish.

if you were setup to support NPS, just think about the feather starfish, sea apple, tube anemone, and everything else.

just tossing this out there.

the hobby has reached a point that so much more is possible. having such a large tank also allows for things that'd be more difficult with a smaller tank.
