does anyone reseal tanks? (1 Viewer)

Glad to hear this, I think this is the right way to go.
 
My 2 cents would be to buy a new tank and use the existing stand. Then you have piece of mind and a brand new, clean, scratch free tank. Call the LFS sponsors and see what kind of a deal you can get.
 
now that the decision has been made, "resealing" a tank is not that hard and not as scary as is being made out :jester:

and I would certainly not pay heed to a guy in sandals with socks trading words with acarpenter or the other way round :bump1:
 
Resealing between panes would be crazy IMO Ive never done it. I had 100% success scraping all interior surfaces to bare glass (4-5 hours on a 180 and really sore fingers when finished). Crucial to get to bare glass with no residue or new silicone won't bond properly. Then I lay in fresh medical grade silicone that bonds to the glass and reseals - In 20 yrs Ive never had one leak after this type of reseal, medical grade silicone is far superior to stuff the OEM guys use IMO (haven't tested it just going by experience). For the record my quote to him was $250 for reseal in case anyone is curious. Addionally tip: if you choose to do this yourself I recommend running a bead up under the plastic trim like Oceanic used to do back in the day it prevent salt creep from running the front of tank so common with AGA and Perfecto tanks.;)
 
Guess I took way too long to write my above post. Glad you are getting a new one. Once it is set up you are stuck. Most of us get in for a reasonable price and before you know it you are sticking $150 in an auto top off, $500 in power heads, $1000 in new lighting, $50 for a fish here and $75 for a fish there, corals at $75 a pop, and before you know it you have $5000 plus invested. I think that is why we are all pushing for you to have a new pristine tank to build your hobby around.

Not trying to start world war 3 just saying NEVER had one leak in 25 yrs...

Yeah, when they fail, the whole side blows out. It shouldn't happen, but every so often it happens to someone.

I will never buy acrylic. Way too easy to scratch.
 
Witenessed this within the last 2 months with a buddy that I shall call Murphy... bought a used glass 240, seam blew out in a week. Bought a used 400, side blew out in 2 weeks. Finally got a tank together bought used rock and a fish, lost everything to marine velvet (last fish past about an hour ago).
