I bought some ecorox from Bulk Reef Supply some time ago, I was just wondering how long would it take to become live rock. Could it be added to live rock and this would help the process along?

I've had the EcoRox now for about 6 months and I seed about 120lbs. of EcoRox with 40lbs. of LR. I also have about 50lbs in sump dry rubbles rock. The whole setup took about 3-4 months to become live and stable.

Do an acid bath...I would recommend doing that with your Ecorox to get all the gunk/dead crap out of it, than seed it with LR. Curing it by itself won't do anything because there isn't anything alive in it to cure.

Rinse it really well and consider an acid bath. I didn't do the acid bath and I haven't really had a problem because of it I have encountered yet.

IMHO, mine is already live. The tank cycled and I now have all the bacteria to breakdown the waste. Adding a piece of established live rock might make it go quicker and you would get other stuff like corraline, pods, and worms. I don't want worms so I'm not interested in doing that. I got pods, etc from getting a clump of cheato.

I've been very happy with this method and haven't really had any problems starting the tank. My skimmer has been pulling a ton of stuff out. I went through diatoms and a cyano bloom that is now almost gone. I may get some hair next but I have a CUC and a tang in the tank now.

After doing this tank, Ecorox is the only way I will go in the future.

The fish will have the bacteria needed to start breaking down the waste already in their poo. Using live rock to help out is recommended by the RK mag on RC because of all of the critters associated with it. These critters will help break down nutrients, detritus, etc in your tank. It's just one step in the filtration process. In my next tank, I plan on having about 80% of the rock be ecorox, and just picking up a small piece of live rock each time I go to the LFS. This will help get a wider variety of hitchhikers without dropping the cash on all that live rock.

I'm going to go with the Eco Rox as well. My plan is to add the EcoRox to my holding tank (along with all of my current live rock, and my livestock) while I'm setting up the new tank. I'm hoping that the 2 to 3 weeks will seed the new EcoRox...and in turn - seed the 240 lbs of sand when added to the new tank. I also plan on getting a cup of LS from Peggy's DSB tank.
