I would like to epoxy the rocks in my 5.5 gallon together so that I am not always knocking them over like I do now. I have some generic plumbers putty, and it is utter crap. What is a good brand of aquarium-safe epoxy that I can get from Fleet Farm or Lowe's?

Plumbers putty works well. It doesn't stick to teh rocks, but if you push it into the crevices, etc, when it gets hard it will lock the rocks in place.

If you a skimmer though you may want to watch it because it can cause them to go a little nuts sometimes.

I think the name of the aquarium specific stuff is aquamend, but it seems to work the same as plumbers putty.

Harvey's plumbers epoxy putty ( has blue writing ) works well and is the same stuff as the aquarium industry putty. It's just repackaged differently and sometimes different color ( You can always try adding food color if you want I have not tried it ). You are probably trying to use it too soon. You kneed it in your hand until it starts to get warm. Sometimes I get my fingers moist with a little water but not very much.

The best use for this is to use it as a mold and not necessarily to hold it. Just place the rocks on it to squish it take the rock off then add super glue gel to both sides. Becuase it molded you now have way more surface area for the glue to stick to. Works awesome that way.

It's of course better to do with tank dry but can be done with water as well.

One very important thing: if you use a skimmer, it will make it go nuts for about 48hours. Either turn the skimmer off or drastically reduce the air input to your skimmer to compensate until back to normal.

The last downside is getting the residue off your hands. Being a girl it probably will drive you more crazy as your probably more particular.

I think they are refering to Plumber's Epoxy Putty. Plumbers putty won't do anything.

Get yourself some 2-part epoxy like this.

I'm a fan of J.B. Waterweld

I've read that it is the same thing as the Aquamend, which prooved to be reef safe and sturdy.


I've used it for some frags, saw no ill effect. Never used copious amounts though

Get yourself some 2-part epoxy like this.
