in my opinion i like finex the vest. 5 years and never had one fail yet. the controller on them are high quality and work, but no heater is safe ifn my opinion without being atached to a controller like a reef keeper lite.

I have this style heater on my tank and have had great success with it. Still run it threw my controller.

I use one 300 watt & 800 watt with controller. both are working fine.

For $30 controller and heater, It's pretty easy to tell, it's going to be just as cheap only has a digital readout. I would not trust it to be comparable to a Ranco ( which is used in industrial applications ) which run about $50 for a single stage. But if your going to invest $50 in a controller, might as well put that towards a $100 RK lite and get more functionality than just a temp controller.

i wouldnt take the risk in depending on it alone.

Like David said you can get an RK Lite for $100, keep watching these boards if you arent in a hurry to get it, controllers often go on sale here. Otherwise talk to Vince at OD im sure he can get you one... otherwise check the web and order one.

With the controller, you dont need the fancy digital read out heater, your controller will tell you the temp. I like the Hydor Theo heaters, but thats me.
