Firefish hiding (1 Viewer)

I picked up a firefish from a lfs last night and I'm curious if it's ok that he's tucked away. Last night, he hung out in the corner and would swim around. Now today he seems to have found a spot in the rock work to call his own. He appears to be breathing and will occasionally move his position in his spot. I know they're shy fish, so I'm hoping I just need to be patient with it.

My current f.fish dug out a hole under a rock an sleeps there at night. They do like to hide for days sometimes. Many times I thought I lost one only to have him show up 3 or 4 days later.
 
That's good to hear! I did throw some food in so I hope it comes out to eat. I saw some of the pellets on the sand bed so if it can smell them, i might be in luck!

It sounds like I should've gotten a more active 'first fish' lol. But it's good to hear that it hiding isn't to be a concern. I assume it will venture out and find food on the bottom of the tank if it's hungry then too.

Im sure i dont need to tell you this but i will just in case, if you have a firefish you need a top on the tank, because eventually it will get spooked by something (its own shadow.. a hermit crab.. a snail.. a fleck of food..) and jump.
 
Haha I do have a top on it. I wanted the top to be recessed to not take away from the clean rimless look, so I actually wanted to get that done before I even considered fish.
 
Will a firefish eat pods? Actually, let's expand that question, will most fish eat pods? I'm looking to do a fuge in the center sump chamber mainly for the pod reproduction and 'free' food that comes with it. Any nutrient export will be a bonus. I just want to know if most fish will eat them on top of the foods I feed.
 
Small opportunistic feeding fish will grab them if they are just hanging around waiting to be eaten, but most fish won't. Fish that feed from the water column don't really have any interest, nor ability to catch, pods.
 
Good luck with the fish. I have a purple firefish that goes unseen for months at a time and he's in a 29g Bio Cube.
 
As the days progress, it's out more and more. Still bolts into it's hiding place when I go to feed, so I hope it slowly stays out and I can see it eat.

Are there any wrasse you would recommend for a nano aquarium? It's a 24 gallon, and ideally any wrasse won't be too much of an ***hole to the other tank inhabitants going forward.
 
Pygmy wrasses would be good, you can add a small group to keep them more active. The other wrasses would probably be too big. Most of the flashers require 50 gallons or so.
 
Thanks for the input. Would a six-line be too much of a risk in a tank this size? I've heard that some are worse than others in terms of temperament.
