Hey Folks,

It looks like I have an early outbreak of bryopsis. I’ve just ordered some fluconazole that has a warning about effects on macro algae. Has any noticed if the fluconazole damages/kills chaeto?

thats a great question. i too have had some bryopsis show up recently and need to get flucon again. Had used it like 3 years ago and worked very well on bryopsis but i didn't have any cheato at that time.

Chaeto is effected for sure:

I treated my reef with Fluconazole about 3 months ago due to a bryopsis out break. As usual, it did an awesome job of getting rid of it. Took about 6 weeks to totally eradicate it.

What I do is continue with my water change schedule and just add more to replace what is lost with the waterchange so the level of Fluco is always at the recommended dosage. This way I am not letting the nutrients rise while trying to fight it, of course no carbon, UV, and I remove my skimmer cup and turn my skimmer down. Aeration is important with the treatment.

My Chaeto stopped growing and I actually had some die off. If I had it to do over again I would remove it altogether and just start over with a fresh batch. There was already so much die off from the algae, plus no skimmer or carbon, I think it would have been better to just remove it and start over.

You probably won’t see any effects for a while but as the weeks roll on, which you need for the bryopsis to die off, it will definitely start to whither. At least, this was my experience.
