I'm considering starting a small frag tank. Running out of room in my 75g display. Maybe 20 gallons or so. Just wondering how people typically run these systems. I'll have the tank, sump, skimmer & lighting, but do people run LR in their systems? Fish? I know this is a fairly open-ended question, but looking for a little advice with the start up. Thanks all!

There are usually a few fish in there. They are good for providing food for the corals.

I have my 4x2x1. I have all my pumps for flow of course, about 30 lbs of live rock in the sump, skimmer, and then I have some rubble in the overflow as its a bigger custom overflow and I have some random rocks here and there with colony grow outs but mainly just racks in the display area and bare bottom. Before I was using a 20L, 150w mh, aqua c remora hob, koralia with bare bottom and could grow anything.
The 20 was fishless thought about a blenny, and the big one has a melanarus and a yellow tang.

What is your goal with the frag tank setup? just more room or to also act as insurance to the main setup? if its more room then if possible just plumb it into the main system.

If its also insurance with more room then you need to keep the two system separate .. which means you will need a complete setup.

I have lots of room in my system... bring over all the frags .. from there on its owners keepers

LOL, If Taklu is too far then just bring them to me! I have my frag tank plumbed into my DT and I added rocks and frag racks. The rocks are used for grow outs and some zoas ans SPS are on them along with some rics and mushrooms. Most of my SPS and Zoas frags I plan on adding to the DT are on the racks and the few I frag I put on rocks as they seem to grow better/faster when they have encrusted on the rocks first. I have a few fish in mine and some are beneficial to help with algae and the rest are for pure enjoyment. Honestly there is no set rule for how you need to setup your frag tank besides having the needed equipment and lighting to support them. Mine looks like a shallow reef with frag racks!

This is an old picture there are frag racks on the walls now too!

Thanks for the feedback. Lol, will keep the frags in my tank for now! Anyway, planning to add some extra space for frags. Don't want to keep them in my display anymore. I won't be able to plumb from the DT, so this will need to be a seperate system. Sounds like I should just stick with all the basics including LR.

Anyone have experience with the 20L? I want something small. Figure it will be easier to maintain.

Just bought one from Petco a couple days ago. Got it drilled with 1" bulkhead and plan to plumb it to my sump sometimes today.

I loved it. It grew everything. Zoas had great color, great growth. The only thing is its a little short on the edges ( I have a 24" fixture mh ) when I set it back up I'm hanging it. If you hung it over I'm sure it'd cover the whole 30". I have a build thread with it under my stats if you wanted to check it out. I highly rec getting black egg crate from brs not using white and ordering a few of the magnets from there as well and make the racks how you want them. I was surprised how many frags I could fit in a 20l lol

yes, i am planning to use it as a frag tank and dont know what lighting i am going to use it yet.

sleeri, I was planning on making a frag tank out of a 20L with a HOB filter and a 24" T5 fixture, a few pieces of small live rock, bare bottom and that's it. Frag tanks don't have to be complex, just functional.

Thanks for all the feedback. Good to hear these don't have to be very complicated systems. I'll probably be growing mostly zoa/paly and LPS frags. SPS will still be kept in the DT. Time to start buying some used equipment.
