K... I didn't make it to the acid bath for the sump rock. But I did get the lights in... after redoing the MH 4 times only to find out the issue was the breaker it is on. :nuts:

Black acrylic I cut out for the bottom of the tank. It turnes out the cut out makes a perfect cover for the overflow. I don't want any algae growing in there since I do not have access. The acrylic is cut just shy of the silicone. I did paint the bottom so there would be no bleeding. The Rock work was a team effort from Scott, Casey and I. When we designed it we did it on an uneven surface... That came to bite us as the large piece ended up resting on two sharp points. We added a couple of clear acrylic chunks to stabilize it.

Okay. I noticed the piece of clear acrylic but wasn't even paying attention to the fact that the whole thing was supported by a sheet of black acrylic. It is looking really nice! Any worries about detritus accumulating around the edges of the sheet?
 
Na. I can tell now one mp40 isn't going to cut it. I haven't figured out what to do yet, but it will likely involve some Tunze nanos. My goal actually is to have detritus settle in one of the front sides for easy siphoning.

It is a little annoying seeing the black acrylic then silicone.... but that's only because I am staring right at it. Get those angels and SPS in there and you will never notice a thing.


I've decided late September is stocking time.... Man, this is going to be a long summer!
 
If one MP40 doesn't cut it, you could always go two. :beerchug:

I may swap the 40 for four 10s.

Still... laminar flow on the bottom is really what I am looking for; to get the detritus settled in one convenient. Thouth... I do plan on putting spider sponges, sun polyps ect under the rock. hmm but they will look sweeter with random flow.... Decisions, decisions... Well, I am not going to do anything about pumps till I get critters in there. ;)

love the rock work. too bad it will make the regal angel looks weak, so just take the regal and put it in my tank. :gay1::biggthumpup:

hahaha....surprised Li didn't post on the plane trip over.

Tank looks great Fritz....still mad you took all the shelf rock pieces and couldn't use them in my 33L! jk

When you commented on trying to have "gunk" accumulate towards the front of the tank are you going to do that using power heads?
I am asking cause the 33L you helped me set up is sick, but the detritus is settling under rock in hard to reach places...
 
Most likely power heads. But a small regular pump and a manifold are not out of the question. Most likely tunze nanos or korallia(s), though. Flow takes a bit of time to figure out. Every time you try something different you have to wait a reasonable amount of time to see if the effect is as you planned or not.
 
I have been burning in a radium 24-7 for a while now. I want to see what the PAR is like after burn in. Got some slime algae and typical first stage critters popping up everywhere. Once I got some tests out I will kill the lights for a while.
Its amazing how the small details take so much time. I put a 2" pipe under the kitchen sink and two RO hoses (one for icecubes) This took hours to get through all the layers of floorboards. One thing I am doing differently now than in my past, is everything gets a nice trim piece from all the scrap acrylic laying around. :gay1: Its kind of cool. My first 40 years of life were some what... ghetto... I'm not saying I got Max Reefer style, but still, I like the way the house is shaping up ;)
 
I have decided the sump and skimmer just aren't cutting it. The refugium is too big and the actual sump space is too small. I am not going to wait for an accident. I called up Bob. I have a sump designed and we are going to go over it this week. I may very well do a few of the sumps and stock some at SWE. The cube tanks are getting more and more popular!

I am testing a space saver 2000 cone, and so far I like it. But the sump will be big enough to handle the normal 2000 cone (which actually has a smaller reaction chamber than the space saver). I love the twist neck on my Alpha 200, and the fact that it is so silent I can not hear the difference when it is on or off. But, it eats up about 22" of space, and I just have to come to grips that I don't have that space. Also it needs 8" of water to run well and I can not sacrifice that in this stand. Besides skimming wise, I personally think they are about the same. But man, that Alpha is a thing of beauty. I am contemplating running it on the wall of fun :biggrin:
 
Here are the plans for the sump (at least until Bob looks at them). I am going to get a ton more space for evap, deeper chamber for the skimmer.
I think I can have room for the extreem 200 and cone 2000, I'd just need a 2" riser for the cone skimmer. These are my two favorite unmodified skimmers.
I am interested in how the space saver will do, but I don't like the access to the pump. You have to thread the cord out a hole.

You can see I am a little confused how to get the front low enough to get the skimmer in and out. The hole for the fuge is off too... my drawing skills lack a little.
