Ok guys. This is 3 days after 3 20% water changes, increased flow ten fold for better skimming. Added power head for more flow as well. Used red slime remover twice, and a uv sterilizer! Plus 3 days no light. I've cut way back on feeding.

Is it cyano, diatoms or dinos? Nothing is working and seems to come back even stronger each time I siphon the sand Nd turkey baste.

I'd say give it more time. Diatom blooms dont just disappear over night. I've never used red slime remover though so I dont know how well that stuff is suppose to work. Doing water changes and getting flow in the tank should work just give it some time. But indeed that is a diatom bloom.

I usually just leave it. Continue to do regular water changes and keep feedings down and my usually go away. I don't bother to stress over it.
 
Check your RO/DI water quality. When the filters on my RO/DI filter were on their way out, I would get cyno/diatom bloom after doing a water change. Could be that the new water that you are adding is fueling the cyno/diatom growth. So by doing multiple water changes you are just making it worse if the new water has higher TDS(phosphate & silica) compared to the water in your tank.
 
You could always try keeping the lights off for a few days... Sometimes it works or at least helps a bit.
 
I did lights out for 3 days. This algae has been getting worse and worse since day 1 last April. My rodi was new then too.

Couple emeralds, 10 nasaurius, few turbos, urchin.... Tank is 1 yr old. Sand has always looked like this.

Pick up some Cerith snails from this place they will stir your sand bed, get a bunch they're cheap. Run some GFO for a couple weeks. after two weeks dump the GFO until you see the problem again. It should clear it up for you.
 
If that red macro algae is able to stay put there without breaking apart, you don't really have much flow over the sandbed. Redirect your powerheads to increase the flow over the sand bed, which will then likely force you to relocate much of the LPS down there. Or, invest in a Diamond goby (if you have a tight fitting lid) which will also force you to relocate much of the LPS down there. Another option mentioned was cucumbers, after that, more nassarius snails I guess, but the cucumbers probably do a better job. Another option is a pistol shrimp/goby pair, if you can get lucky enough for them to live up front. They too, will bury your corals though...

GFO would help.


If I didn't want to do GFO, I'd redirect the flow. I'd do the diamond goby followed by the cucumbers if I was unwilling to redirect the flow. If I had an open top, I'd do the cucumbers and not think about the diamond goby.
 
I was running a full cup of gfo every 2 weeks I have a reactor plus there's a kiralia 800 gph power head directly to the left 3" above the sb running parallel to sb. Algae is whipping around. Point it any lower I create a sand storm.

Stopped running gfo 2 weeks after running for 10 months with no change. No use spending 60 dollars every other month if it's not doing anything.

so the reason I have had this algae from day 1 of my cycling completing a year ago is because I don't have enough cerith snails, fighting conch or a cucumber? I'm nervous putting any snails in because if this is dinos, it's toxic to snails...
