How do I know I am ready for SPS? (1 Viewer)

So my 65 gallon is done cycling and life is being sustained (GSP's and some damsels) but I think I want to try a hardy SPS. I have 4 36" t5's (2 act and 2 50/50), and a pretty good amount of flow (little giant 4-MDQX-SC closed loop with 2- 1/2" outlets). Any ideas on what would be good to start with or what I would need to do to be ready to try.

Thanks for any advice!
Dave

Before ready to try must understand, test, and maintain both your calcium and Alk levels needed for calcification. Also must strive for low phosphates as that inhibits calcification.

If you have that covered then likely ready to try some. I'd recommend getting frags from corals that have been in captivity already for many years. Avoid maricultured and wild caught for now.

nitrite, nitrate, alk, mag, calcium

Testing for nitrite is worthless... it's not harmful in marine aquaria....

Ca, Mg, Alk, NO3, PO4

Start with a Cap or a digi that you get from the club, poccis are good too!

There is a pay it forward monti running around here somewhere. I don't know if any frags are available right now or not.

I'm not sure if I have "the" pay it forward monti, but I do have a larger purple rimmed monti cap that I've been giving away. I got it from HermitSolo this fall and it was starting to shade some of my sps so I took it down. It's still in good health and growing so you're more than welcome to get a big piece from me to try out.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thank you for the offer! I am going to get a test kit and check the levels for the tank before I put any SPS in the tank.

I tried to call you and let you know I have a variety of montis you can try out. If you want to swing by sometime and pick one out let me know.

btw...I don't think the police are really going to forward my message. They said 'they'd come get me', not 'thank you, we'll forward the message.'

I have a small frag of a peach Monti Digita that I could give you.

i would personally wait till the coralline algae starts to show up. if thats growing good, then your ready for sps.

yep armegedon beat me to it,I say when u start noticeing coraline spots the size of quarters then ure more then likely to start sps,I have some orange monti u can have

The rock I have was covered heavily with coralline algae, but when my tank was torn down the stuff on the surface died off. It is coming back really fast now. I am going to give it another couple of weeks to let the coralline to come back.

Are you talking about my profile? I didn't even know there was a phone number.

My tank has been up for months and there has been no coralline, infact the stuff on my rocks has been dissapearing pretty quickly, SPS seem fine though

Mine has been slowly dissapearing - I was wondering if there was a problem - maybe that's it.

hmm. I thought it could have been the T5s, but I suppose it could be competition, especially since I dont dose Ca at all.

typically you don't see it unless you have a lot of sps that are fast growing...

In my 29BC I have the one large colony and 9 frags varying from 1"-3". I've been pouring in large quantities of 2 part to try to keep up with my ca and alk demand. 10-15ml of each per day - almost 5x what I started out dosing.
