Discovery Aquatics is bringing in it's first set of Prodibio products (pronounced Pro-Dib-Be-O). If you've ever been interested in trying probiotics on your reef, now is the time. It should be here Friday.

We have on order:

Reef Boster
Bioptim
Stop Ammo
Biogest

Some Info:

BIO DIGEST is a hyper-concentrated bacterial compound that satisfies two functions: Installing biological filtration and digesting aquarium waste.

Packaging the ampoules under nitrogen allows for very long conservation and makes it very economic as each ampoule is 100% effective.

Use BIO DIGEST when starting up an aquarium, during nitrate surges, after filter cleaning, in poor quality water: cloudy water, unpleasant odors, spread of algae…

BIO DIGEST digests organic waste, cleans the aquarium, reduces nitrates, phosphates, fights algae and, through a probiotic effect, reduces the risk of unexplained illness.

BIO DIGEST, when used regularly, re-establishes optimal proportions of key bacterial strains and improves water quality.

In the waste products of the aquarium, micro-organisms that enable bacterial to digest optimally are often lacking. They have already been retained or eliminated during a previous biological transformation in the aquarium.

BIOPTIM Marine provides bacteria with all the missing micro-nutrients: trace elements, selected amino acids, natural vitamins (Riboflavin) and surface agents from plants to facilitate absorption of the components by the cells.

BIOPTIM Marine OPTIMALLY dynamizes the work of the aerobic, anaerobic and facultative bacteria present in the aquarium. BIOPTIM Marine enables, by the increase and dynamization of these bacteria, a reduction in nitrates, phosphates and carbohydrates, a decrease in silt, mulm and filamentous algae, and an improvement to the quality of the water.

BIOPTIM Marine reduces the BOD – biological oxygen demand – and therefore contributes to a raised Redox potential. The Probiotic effect of BIOPTIM Marine also reduces bacterial infections and mycosis.

Corals—even hard zooxanthellae carrying coral that feeds on light—need nutritional supplements.

REEF BOOSTER has been developed with aquaculture experts on the basis of high performance products used to start up crustacean, mollusk, and bivalve larvae. It is a high quality micro feed that provides corals with all nutrient supplements they require, including omega-3, to maintain their color.

REEF BOOSTER favors the development of corals, clams and micro-fauna and the reduction of nitrates and phosphates by feeding and maintaining anaerobic bacteria on live rock. Its ampoule packaging allows very long conservation and complete use of all the product.

After a few weeks, hermatypic corals—Plerogyra and Euphyllia—expand and the ahermatypic polyps—Scleronephtya and tubastraea—Gorgonians, inflate. Corals thus stabilize their coloration.

Ammonium is very toxic in an aquarium, especially when the pH level exceeds 7.5. It is the cause of nitrite surges and the cause of stress, immunity deficiency and damage to the gills.

STOP AMMO made from natural plant extracts, neutralizes ammonium in the aquarium, breeding and transport water, reduces stress, prevents damage caused to gills and limits the production of nitrates.

STOP AMMO also neutralizes dangerous gasses produced by the putrefaction of organic matter.

Use STOP AMMO when starting up an aquarium, to introduce fish more rapidly, when renewing, to reduce accidental nitrite surges (decomposition of an inaccessible fish…)

STOP AMMO is also used by experts when transporting and acclimatizing fish.

Just a note for myself:

Added 1 Bioptim 12/12 and 1 Reef Booster to the Tank 12/13

No noticeable effects, positive or negative from Bioptim Day 2

Reef Booster clouds water and smells similar to reef actif, interestingly as a food source, it seems to shut down the skimmers bubble productions, maybe to prevent it from being skimmed out immediately?

**note determine how long water remains cloudy

I'm actually selling them all as singles for $3.99 each, which is about the same price of buying a 6 pack after shipping. This way you can try different types, without buying a whole kit.

I wouldn't expect fast results, it simply takes time. If you are going to use know that you will be dosing every two weeks. For most systems , this means 1 ampoule of bacteria every two weeks and for a 100g system, 4 ampoules of the carbon product. Expect three or more months before you see a lowering of nutrients.

Very True, it takes about 3 doses on average before people start seeing results. It's just nice because people can get the BioDigest, ReefBooster and Bioptim in singles, instead of having to buy a whole set of each all at once.

Most of the people that I've talked with who ran this had the best results with a sand bed. Likely more surface area for bacteria biofilms to develop than on BB.....

I bought 2 amps of the BioDigest primarily to assist in cycling during my next upgrade to a Tech 120 in January. So I've got time to research & do it right.

Partial system specs:

Existing: 65g/20L sump with in-display 7" lively, mature DSB; top-off via Osmolator is kalk w/vinegar controlled by AC3; Maintenance ozone (~25mg O3/hour) through a Deltec TS-1250 skimmer runnng activated carbon on both the water & air effluent; coral focus is LPS with a light bioload of 2 fishes. I do run a GFO reactor, and the filter sock on the drain is changed every 3 or 4 days. (Um.. I like clear water!)

New (in January): 120g w/40g sump.

There are absolutely no issues w/my little 65... it's just I suspect after all this time that my pioneer bacterial species have largely evolved into climax communities, & that it would be good to mix things up.

I searched Prodibio for detailed instructions, but I still can't figure out whether I ought to disable my skimmer use for a day or so after dosing BioDigest. (I don't want $3.99 of bacteria to end up in my collection cup ;).)Perhaps I missed the reference.

Thoughts/Feedback?

Thanks,

~Jim

I don't know anything about the BioDigest Jim but your new setup sounds pretty killer! You promised us pics in another thread and I'm holding you to that. ;)

Are you planning on moving the DSB? From what I've read you definitely don't want to mess with it, just get rid of it and start with fresh sand.

Thanks Nate! It's all one big learning curve, that's for sure. You will definitely see pics. My motto is when Jim makes a promise, you can count on Q.

I'll answer your sandbed query in a separate thread if that's okay. Jake might not like me stirring up his Prodibio topic :)

1/17 Added 1 Reef Booster, 1 Bioptim, 1 BioDigest, 1 Stronti, 1 Iodi

And Added Reef Actif

Just did some water testing:

Coral System with SPS: 5 Nitrate
Fish System: 10 Nitrate
Anemone System: 15 Nitrate
NPS System (heavy feeding) with Prodibio: Undetectable Nitrate

You need to dose a carbon source as well.... just dosing the bacteria will have limited effect. If it makes you feel better, turn your skimmer off for a couple hours of dosing. Otherwise, don't

Thank you mattb! Appreciate your response & reassurance. Re carbon: I choose not to keep vodka around for personal reasons, so I have been dosing vinegar w/kalk (the "DG Method") for the past year. I have not investigated other carbon source alternatives.

Jake, I will PM you tomorrow w/my next Prodibio order.
