I had a pair of flame angels in my 180 I'd hoped to breed back then, but getting fertile eggs always seemed like it would have been hard. (plus I had no way to raise them, I was still trying to figure clowns out at the time). Method #3 was what I'd thought would work. Not that its important, but any idea why that doesn't work? Not large enough to get it all in there? Sperm get stuck in mesh or wash out?

The mesh filter sock worked great at collecting the eggs. The problem is that the sperm was not collected, and would disperse into the tank. In a 300 gallon tank, it gets diluted very quickly and only a few eggs are fertilized. The eggs seem to require at least 5-10 seconds contact time to actually fertilize. If I scoop the eggs without letting them sit in the water, they are 0% fertile.

Day 4 after 'hundreds of eggs and 90% fertility', what is your status? Have you added a second such batch? How far are you going to space them out now with this new collection method?

I don't even know when you said (or if you said when) they start to eat pods, are you concerned you won't have enough? I imagine it is a good problem to have, maybe?

I don't know the circulation of the write up, hopefully it provides you with good visibility. Good luck.

Edit: Approximately how many made it past your day 2 bottleneck this time with the suspected bacterial issues? Did you switch salts and it improved or are you still at a high mortality rate?

Aside from more time away from work and more time doting on these babies, what do you think you need in order to improve your results? New/different ideas? Better equipment? More time to culture pods?

Chad- let me know if there is some way to "invest" in your project. I want to support captive breeding programs as much as possible. Let me know Chad!

As of now, we still seem to have 200-300 larvae cruising around the larval tank. They started feeding on day 3 post hatch, which is when I took the photo. With the new collection method being so successful, I'm going to only do one batch at a time so I can handle feeding them. I've doubled my copepod cultures to prepare as well.

I switched back to instant ocean, which seems to have made a difference. I also added the larvae to the tub much earlier than usual as well, which may have also made the difference.

I think prey availability is what I need to work on. With more larvae, I really think having high enough numbers of appropriately sized naups is going to determine my success.
 
Very interesting difference in this batch compared to round two. My 10 day old larvae are further developed than the 18 day old larvae from the last batch.

Striking difference between batch 2 at 18 DPH and batch 3 at 14 DPH. Do you think it is due to better nutrition from a more mature pod population?

Also, do you still have 'a lot' of them in there? Very exciting.

I don't see any bending tails yet, so you must not be to the flexion bit that is so 'challenging' yet.

I still think we should fund Chad's research, whether it be via a gift from TCMAS, or another source.This cannot be a cheap project by no means and any help we give would benefit everyone.
