Jonty's latest Build thread (1 Viewer)

Tinkers have not been and issue for me in the past,I threw a lobo and an SPS colony in there for a day and didn't feed them and he did not touch them , I would love it if he turns out to love plays and mushrooms. How cool would that be ;)

Neo hogfish, nice.

That's the one red fish I want for my tank but just a little out of budget.

I love him peppermint Angel intensity color amazing fish.

Nope got the right part the next day it is working like a champ, great piece of kit.

The one I have now is only good for up to 600g/hr and I use it for the AIO bio pellet output, the new one has been built to handle 4000g/hr if need be and one roll of filter paper should last between 6-8 months. It will be for the fish room rebuild which is coming the end of Feb now all the equipment is in. the Thiel unit I will sell the end of Feb.

Apparently finishing off the appearance of the tank is only one small project that Jonty has in store for his tank.

Back in October, I made a trip out to Jonty's to measure up and design a fascia to frame in his 300DD reef tank.
Here's a picture I took for reference on that day; a great big hole!

Over the next few months, a design and material were finalized and I started the actual build after the new year began.
Jon originally mentioned that he liked black walnut; or something finished similar to it. (One time he even mentioned white laminate; that would've been a completely different build.) After having previously worked with black walnut on various projects, I know that there really is no substitute for the warmth and character that black walnut has naturally. So, black walnut it is.
To fill in the opening, I started with making jambs and trim work to finish off the existing wall. The actual fascia sits back a little bit; right against the stand. Jonty didn't need access to the stand, so the bottom panel just covers up the stand and the black trim of the tank. Jonty wanted access to the tank from above; for maintenance, lighting, feedings, etc., so the top panel needed to be removable or doors. I ended up making the panel match the bottom panel and used some heavy duty overhead lift system hinges that I found through my work. The two hinges allow the entire panel to lift out of the way and stay open while working on the tank. The last pieces installed were two filler strips along the sides of the tank to cover the gap and glass seams.
Here's what it looked like right after the installation was completed; should've picked up those towels.

And with the top panel opened.

We still need move the controller display over a bit to allow for the trim work, so I will be making a black walnut plate for that.
Other than a few hiccups with the drywall needing to be cut back in a few spots and notching around the new tile floor, the install went rather well. I had a very capable "apprentice" to help me move the large fascia around. Thanks, Jon, for the assistance and supervision. And "Thanks!" for the Mille "frag"!

I do have to say that after the fascia was installed, it really changed to appearance of the room. Without having to look through the glare of the bright reef lights, the viewing panel of the aquarium is really a focal point in the room.
And with the new tile floor and the incredibe Arts&Crafts/SteamPunk furniture, this is going to be an outstanding room. The mix of leather, metal and black walnut make this a true man's cave! Well done, Jon!

I'm already on the list for Jonty's meeting in April.
I mentioned at the beginning that this was just one small project in a grand scheme of changes that Jonty's making to his system.
I suggest you sign up now!

Hopefully he cleans up that joke of a 'fish' room. Pfft, freaking amatures over there.

Have no idea why everyone in the club doesn't use your skills. Very impressive

Geez, how did I ever miss this build thread . This is a beautiful setup. All I can say is WOW!

I finally have a holy grail fish (for me) me coming next week , very excited :)
