I'm heading to Wisconsin for the 4th and will be relatively close to Rhinelander. I was thinking I'd go to Foster & Smith on Saturday to pick up a few fish. The trick is I won't return to MN until Sunday afternoon.

Any thoughts on keeping fish for the day or day and a half? I really don't want to pick up something nice only to have them expire on the trip back.

Alternatively - would anyone be interested in going in on a purchase from Liveaquaria? There is free shipping over $225. Maybe this has been discussed here before.

They won't allow you to go into the facility, but they will let you pick up orders from divers den.

They do, but it's nothing special. 4 MARS systems of fish, 3 of those are salt. There's a better selection down here.

I see. I just placed a $300 order myself through LiveAquaria for two wild caught orchid dottybacks and two wild caught springeri dottybacks, should be arriving Tuesday!

If you are purchasing the fish off the Diver's Den list and picking it up from the Retail Outlet on Sunday, it will be packed just like a fish being shipped.

So, yes.
The fish will be packed to survive an overnight trip home. From speaking with the staff on numerous occasions, the fish technically can survive a two day trip; just as a precaution to a shipping mishap.
Your Diver's Den purchases will be waiting for you in the Retail Outlet for pick-up. You'll set that up with them when you place your order. Very quick and easy.

Purchasing a fish from the Retail Outlet will be just like picking up a fish from your LFS.
You may ask them if it's possible to add more oxygen to the bag and you can place it inside a styrofoam shipping box.

I've been over there numerous times and have picked up orders from both the website and the Retail Outlet.
I have never had an issue bringing them home.

Hope this answers your question.
Have a great trip to Rhinelander; my second favorite city in Wi.

No thoughts from anyone on survival of fish on a day trip?

The fish should survive if its only a day since they ship fishes out all the time with over night shipping. Give it plenty of air and keep the temp moderate if you have a bubbler you can use that as well and I suppose you can feed it mysis if you bring some from home.

I wouldn't use a bubbler or feed the fish. Doing so will spike ammonia levels in the bag due to the lack of any biological filtration in a bag (most of the bacteria lives on the rock, glass, and sand). Feeding the fish will increase the waste produced, also increasing the ammonia. A good portion of the fish kept can go without food for a couple of days. I'd hesitate to put mandarins, anthias, and the like in here due to their evolution to eat almost constantly.

Yep, this is definitely what I was looking for. I called the retail store and they didn't really have a clue. Calling Liveaquaria however they said I could place an order up to 48 hours before picking up.

I'm not ordering from divers den, but hopefully this won't be a problem. We will see when I place the actual order.

Diver's Den is the their saltwater facility in Rhinelander, anything standard off LiveAquaria is shipped from their facility in California. So if you are not ordering off Diver's Den wysiwyg you wont be able to pick it up. They have a small pet store for all of the Dr Foster and Smith stuff (Cat, Dog, Lizard, etc) but they have a small selection of saltwater stuff in the back.

If you already went over the limit to get free shipping you might as well have it delivered right to your house. Saves you some time and hassle. And even though both facilities are different I believe they will still honor the free shipping if you order part of it from liveaquaria and part off the den.

What he said. But...
Many of the aquacultured corals that are sold on the LiveAquaria.com website are shipped from the WI facility.
So if you're getting those types of corals, look on the righthand side of webpage to see just where the coral is being shipped from.
This is a good way to add aquacultured frags, CCGC corals, and coral and frag packs to your Diver's Den order to reach Free Shipping.
I had suggested to Kevin about adding CUC items to their facility when they do the expansion. That would easily help out when ordering and visiting.

And to my two cents in on the cost of shipping...
For those of us without a decent LFS very near (let alone a place like DFS), when you factor in the time spent and gas used to travel from store to store just to see what they have, spending $35 for shipping to your door is not a factor. And LiveAquaria offers a 14 day guarantee on most fish and corals, and a 30 day guarantee on the CCGC corals.

Looking into placing an order tomorrow. Anyone on the W, SW side of the cities who could pickup on Friday around noon or so?
