It's that time of year again....when UPS and FedEX delay our livestock shipments. I wanted to see how many people have had livestock survive a delay.

How long? time of year? type of livestock?

I tend to stay away from livestock buying via internet at this time of the year.

I had a box get held up by fedex for 2 1/2 days from cherry corals and I got everything alive the zoas were even opened up when I took them out the box I also had a few acros that had full polyp extension after about an hour or two in the tank.

partly the cold, and plus the fact that ups and fedex deliver late afternoons, so theirfore I would not get them inside for another 10 hrs and they would freeze solid.

Whenever purchasing livestock its always best to ship Priority Overnight. That way your shipment is guaranteed before 10:30am the next day. That is the only option I offer for shipping livestock. Some companies will ship just standard overnight which in most cases you might not get your shipment till 5pm or sometimes later, you will see this alot with "free" shipping so they can cut costs. If the supplier don't use good heat packs like the 48hr ones I sell and use they can turn into ice cubes in the winter.

Ditto. If ever using an LFS was a better deal, this time of year is it. Just assign some value to your time dealing with delayed shipments, some value to your peace of mind (as compared to the stress of worrying if it will get delivered safely and on time, and if they will actually ring your bell and wait for you to come to the door or just toss it out the door the next day as they drive by), and some value to the hassle of getting replacements sent when they die, and the LFS quickly becomes a better deal.

Not to mention you probably have a better survival rate.

JMHO. Its to cold to subject live tropical animals to this weather. Not good for you, but can easily be killer for them.

I actually dont have any issues shipping coral in the winter, and actually prefer it more than the hot summer months. When shipped with good heat packs usually the corals do awesome in the winter time.

I have had summer delays of one day that were not a problem. Winter delays on the other hand can be a killer. Even "next day" delivery doesn't mean much as the fine print excludes some delivery deadlines and it only covers the shipping cost. I get next day UPS some time around 5:30pm and as late as 7pm. A couple of years ago UPS killed a pair of Flame wrasse that were shipped overnight. I don't know what they did to them but the water was 37deg by the time I received it. If I ever order livestock in the winter again I will have it held for pick up (FedEx) or have it delivered to a UPS store.
