I just started up my new sump and am using a Mag 7 to power it. I love the flow and size of the mag 7 but the noise is bugging me, it sounds like its vibrating constantly. The noise is louder then the overflow, I can barley hear the sound of the water!

Is this normal? Will it go away like it does with my HOB filter after I clean it? Is there something I can do to reduce the noise? I put an old sponge filter under the pump to reduce the amount of vibration that carries over to the tank and also some padding on the return for the same reasons. Is there anything else I can do, or am I going about this the wrong way?

Alot of people will put a mouse pad under the pump to stop it from vibrating on the tank. Is the pump hard plumbed with PVC or did you use flexible tubing?

I'm using a brand new Mag 7 (with a silent overflow. aka, the Herbie) and seriously can BARELY here the pump at all. My system is near silent.

I am using braided hose.

You don't have to soft plumb the whole system. Just a 6" or so piece between the pump and the pipe will keep it quiet. Also as suggested a pad under the pump (not sure I'd use a computer mouse pad, many times they are glued together) will keep it quiet.

I would also make sure there is no pitting in the impeller assembly or motor. The only time mine get loud is if something like a shell gets stuck in a groove and bangs around.

@ Zoolan - Just curious, but do you not use the pre-filter on your Mag?

Some I do, some I don't. It depends on the what is happening prior to them in terms of filtration. It is a huge hassle to change them out if they are buried in a sump or mixing tank, so in some cases, I just let them run without, and run filter socks, hopefully preventing junk from getting in in the first place.
