So we cleaned a bit, downsized the desk, and moved a few items..

So.... with all that new found space.. what should we put there?

I am temped to move the frag tank to the other side of Trinity in the photo. If you know the store, I was thinking of putting it to the right of the door that goes in to the rest of the building. That would leave the whole front wall for....
 
How about you get a nice chair or couch for people to sit in. Jake always made me stand around when I came to visit. ;)

Yup, a big ol' 180 or something would look nice... Either that or another top down tank to hold coral stock.

If you plan on doing more hardlines (dry goods) you could use that area for some nice stock shelving to display skimmers, pumps, lights, reactors, etc...
 
I thought about the couch, but... can I charge you to sit on it?

I am thinking a wall of 20Ls for display :)
 
Whatever you add, make sure it makes you money. With a small space you need to maximize your revenue streams...Maybe a variety of display items and keep the "stock" in the back so you can get a lot of product on display. A kind of on-line way to display items and the "cart" is in the back...

I agree a display tank would be cool, but can you afford to pay the electric bill on a set up that won't pay you back?

unless i make a large change in the electric bill, it's not a issue (I don't pay the bill now)

I am 100% going to use the space for money making. I will be making a "display" tank, but it won't be huge. Currently its a 20H. I will likely replace it with a 28 gallon JBJ cube that has LED lighting. That way, it will be a running display, with corals and fish in it, but it won't be for sale. It has a small foot print, will be something I'll have in stock ready to sell (in the back.. did I tell you, there is no back room?)

I have a rack that holds 6 20L tanks I'd like to see in the store and the rest will likely be dry goods. I just figured if someone came up with a good idea I'd run with it :)
 
i keep my "faces" in back. with coral you might have over stock or you may not. keep one itme in front and when it sells- face it(refill its location) i am sure you knew that. save everything that is public and still have a clos customer base area.
 
There is an area behind the 8ft display tanks that has the QT tanks (and the live rock tank) it's my back room. I have one other frag tank that I will try to fit back there, or I might move the one small one currently on the show floor(one of Jakes original twin frag tanks) back there as well.
 
Being that it is a store...how about merchandise to sell!! Tanks,nano systems, accessories, a rank with shelfs of misc tank setup parts.

Just my two cents
 
I vote display tanks and dry goods. I always thought DA was a little light on dry goods.

You could store the dry goods under the tanks and have a nice small display to the side replenished from the storage when items sell. Things like spectrum pellets, magnet cleaners (the good ones not the crappy mag floats petco has), test kits (FWIW, I've been pretty happy with the seachem test kits for your basic cycling parameters. Good price point and they even come with a standard), Aiptasia-X, revive, etc.

Most of what you listed is behind my head Matt ;)

How bout the hammerhead glass cleaners? everyone loves those. I got one with my 120 when I bought it. makes the mag float look like a cheap petco toy.. (oh wait... they are) I did notice there was a complete lack of dry foods though..

Use this to make a hallway in front of your desk and extending from the doorway to the other part of the building. Behind it, put a shelf for dry goods in the shape of an L. The L runs from the window to the back of this rack and then along the back of the rack. Takes away your 'view' from the desk, however and makes dry goods a 'blind spot' for ya.

Yes, for large tanks they're great. I'd look into things like "the nimble nano" though for those of us who lose 1/30th of our tank volume just by adding a hammerhead to scrub the glass ;)
