New Camera!

Just a quick update! Finally got some time to take out my new DSLR; a Canon Rebel T3i, and play around with it, and I learned I need to really need to read up on how to use my new gadget! Exposure, White Balance, Aperture, ISO, f-stop, AI-Focus, etc etc. It will take me some time but I should get it right sooner or later.

Anyway, I wanted to throw at least one picture up on the build thread so I can document my Photography progress, and to let everyone else who follows along criticize me for thy lack of skills at the moment!

Nice shot of a good portion of my corals, just fully Auto everything.

And I figured I need a new FTS, so here ya go! I have to get rid of all that blue!! Will be reading up on White Balance tomorrow :)

..and now I see 1024x768 is the best size for the forum! Not 800x600 like the first picture..

Tank projects update!

Update on some tank projects!

Took some time tonight to photograph some of the tank projects I have been busy with lately, and I figured I will throw them up on the thread tonight while i'm watching the SCSU Men's Hockey game and having a couple morgan cokes.

Projects:

- Magnetic On/Off Cabinet Lighting
- Fuge light DIY
- 2 Part dosing
- DJ Power strip
- Tunze Osmolator
- Coral Placement
- Added 1 Black Occ. Clown & 1 Lubbocks Fairy Wrasse

Mounted 2x 6" LED Bars controlled by a Magnetic On/Off switch attached to the cabinet door, works great and was pretty easy to install. Purchased from ElementalLED.com

Switched from Kalk feed through my ATO to 2 part dosing about a week ago, switch over went pretty smoothly and now I can finally put my Tunze Osmolator to good use, set that up as well.

Also, I installed my new Fuge light; it is a RapidLED Solderless LED kit w/ dimmable driver and potentiometer. It has 5 red LED's and 1 Blue LED, nice violet spectrum for Macro Algae growth. Picked up some Chaeto as well, not much growth yet but it will come.

Next Project is to install a DJ Powerstrip, I picked this one up because of the Blue switches, didn't like the usual red switches that you see so much on other builds.

And finally the most recent FTS, all the coral from the fall frag swap are now mounted on the rocks and ALL are busy encrusting! My ORA Joe the Coral acro I got from 90ct about 4 months ago is really "blowing up", it is popping out new branches from everywhere, really fun to watch from day-to-day.

**You can see in this FTS the 2 new tankmates; 1 Black Occ. Clown & 1 Lubbocks Fairy Wrasse. I picked both of them up during the SWE Black Friday sales and both are doing great in the tank. The Black Clown took a pretty good beating getting from the QT tank to the DT because he was sucked up into the 1/2" tubing I was using to drain the tank, I had to cut the tubing to get him out as he squezzed in there pretty tight.. but he pulled through and is now good buddies with the original clown in the tank.

Lubbocks Fair Wrasse on the middle left, and the Black Occ. Clown on the bottom right next to the other Orange Occ Clown.

Looking nice man!

I've been thinking about adding a magnetic switch to my stand. Did you have to cut apart any wires, or was it a plug in sort of thing?

You know you can save a lot of money on dosing salts if you run kalk and use the salts to supplement it. ;)

Thanks man, the 2 part isn't that expensive, never looked into dosing salts + kalk though ha.

It was pretty much all plug n play, only thing is tightening screw down on to spliced cords, nothing major.

Still working with the new camera, I was given Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 for christmas but I think I will go and get Adobe Lightroom as well.

I picked up another Mp40 to replace the 2 Mp10's, still trying to find the perfect spot vertically and laterally for the mp40

I'll try and get more pictures soon, most likely next week sometime whenever my shipment comes in from the Cherry Corals Live Sale :)

My "scores":
- Hellboy Acro
- Pokerstar Monti
- Sunset Monti

Here's a new FTS.

There is not one thing missing in your setup. I love it! :)

Did you build the screen tops? What auto feeder are you using?

How is photoshop? I am new to the photography game and need some software.

Thanks KoleTang!

I did build the screen tops, they are the BRS DIY screen tops. I am not using an auto feeder anymore, I guess the only reason I removed it was because I added the ReefBrite onto my Tek fixture and the auto-feeder would no longer fit. In retrospect i'm glad I am not using it anymore because I no longer need to run my GFO reactor to keep phosphates at respectable SPS levels.

I would recommend looking into Adobe Lightroom, I am going to pick it up sometime this next week so I can let you know what I think of it! Photoshop Elements is nice for organizing and small physical corrections but for what I want to do Lightroom is what I really need. And, after consulting with a friend of mine who does a lot of photography he suggested Lightroom as well which pretty made up my mind to pull the trigger!

Hey Marshal, would you be willing to sell me one of your old MP10's??
Also great looking tank I'm diggin it!

Looking nice! Mind coming over and taking care of my algae problem? One condition though no changes to the livestock (+/-)and cannot cut down on feeding ;)

How's the fuge light doing? How's the Chaeto doing, it should really take off under LEDs assuming there's nutrients available

Lol that would be a tough diagnosis without changing your feeding :)

The chaeto fuge is doing "well" very healthy green but havn't noticed a lot of growth yet i'm guessing between my overkill skimmer, filter socks, and chaeto there just isn't much left in the nutrient department to grow algae. Its more of a buffer for me, if my chaeto really takes off at least it will be a nutrient export and it will help me gauge what my levels are in the tank. But my SPS are loving the nutrient levels!!

hay tank looks great. do you like it being drilled on the side vs bottom like other tanks?

Considering i've never had a bottom drilled tank I can't answer your question with %100 certainty but when I think about it, Yes I do like the back drilled tanks better, especially the coast to coast overflows. It leaves the whole bottom 2/3 of the tank to the aquascape and uninterrupted flow from side to side. And, my Tomini Tang loves to chill out under the overflow box once in a while.

I'm sure the SPS are liking it; keep the pics coming  Its always a good time watching others progress and success

in my case there any change to feeding levels at this time would mean actually feeding the tank. I have fed the tank close to nothing over the last 3 weeks... I'm not too worried as the tank appears self sustaining, it appears there's something for each fish to eat. I actually add frozen anytime I see SPS appear any different from usual. thats about the feeding it gets

Oh wow, a self feeding tank? That's new :)

I've tricked the fish into believing all they need is saltwater to live ;)

actually its possible since most fish in the tank mostly herbivorous, but they got nuts anytime ready to eat food is added to the tank
