Deposit placed, drawings attached. Hope the floor holds!!! So, who's up for helping me carry this sucker into the house???

Tank Specs:
  • Glass- Miracles making the tank
  • 95x36x30
  • Starfire front/sides 3/4" glass all around
  • Internal overflow, trapezoid box
  • Bean animal drain current plan
  • Eurobraced with full lids

Stand I plan on making out of metal and having the cabinet shop who did my kitchen skin the stand to match. Planning on a 36" stand height, if I'm gonna need a stool to work on it anyways might as well have a nice viewing height.

Current unknowns:

  • Lighting- ran out of money. Will use existing 5' ATI fixture until I figure out something.
  • Filtration- still out of money. Will add my ETSS back in. LaCl3 dosing now and odds are will start carbon dosing soon. ATS/Fuge/WC not keeping up with the PO4. Will need additional pump to run ATS/Fuge/Reactors, might look into DC pumps or see if I can make due with what I have.
  • Intank flow- Peculators off a dedicated Iwaki 100 with Tunze's (2) 6105's and Jeabo's WP-40 (2 if they stick to the glass...) for now. Might go 4x Jeabo WP-60's or another set of Tunze's 6105's. I really want Tunze's 6255 but not sure if I could ever bring myself to spent that much on power heads.

Fish- already got some new ones from the Liveaquaria.com open house last weekend!

Plan is SPS/Fish tank. Angels & Tangs a plenty.

Sounds like the makings of an epic tank! I don't even want to know what you had to shell out for that tank! :fistcash::fistcash::fistcash::micro:

40-44" tall will bring the tank to eye level, so you can view corals without breaking your back. plus that will give extra room under the tank for equipments.
i like the combo tunze wavebox with the 2 6105 and 2 wp40 or 4 6105s. i was using 4x6105s, but change out to 2x6105 and wavebox.

All equipment is in a basement dedicated room.

I've never seen a wave box in use, they give me the creepies for some reason. Overall more of a gyre guy than a wave guy currently.

I can't wait to see this tank. If you need a large skimmer for cheap I have a asm g6x for sale good for up to 1200gal. Would work good until you save up the $$$ for an expensive skimmer.

I made my Stand 40" for my 165 and love the extra height for viewing because it's right at eye level and I don't have to crouch to view the tank. Another plus is it's viewable over the back of the couch. I can't wait to see this build love the dimensions!

before i use the wavebox, me too. the same goes with controller vs timer and bk vs any skimmer.

+1, was just over the other day to see this tank and the viewing height was very comfortable for my 6' 2" self.

I agree about the stand height. I wish I would have made my tank stand higher, although it works for me since I have the big chair right in front of it it would have made working under the stand so much easier.. I still have that MRC-MR 4 skimmer rated for 900 gallons really cheap if you want.

@NorthSideReef - I agree with you that your stand height is comfortable from the chair. again, I'm 6'2". However, had you built the tank stand taller, you could have built a lifter box for the chair. That lifter box seems insignificant, but you could spend weeks thinking of cool ways to utilize that new space under the chair for storing a couple more gallons of water in that room lol

Changing the stand to 40", plus the 2x layers of 5/8" thick wood & styrofoam will move it up some more

Why stop @ 40"? I built mine @ 48" and have a 180 on it. Makes for perfect viewing when in the wall, and plenty of head room to see over the people sitting on the couch. :)

Few brain farts of late:

- Turns out trying to get a 95lx36wx40h stand through a 34 7/8" wide door might have issues. This hit me as I was leaving Jen's meeting for some reason...yikes. Options: 1) Make the stand in two parts 95x18x40 each basically (thanks Adam for the idea!) 2) make the stand 34 1/2" tall. I'm leaning towards option #2, once I add on plywood and foam the tank will be 36" high, close enough to the 40" mark. Challenge with option #1 is if I ever decide to put a sump under the tank it'd never be possible with that much metal chopping up the free space underneath. Plus, a buddy already bought the steel and I don't want to spend anymore in it; option #1 would take a lot more steel.

Open to ideas on this one.

- Plan on welding up the stand Monday night (hence the oh s#$% per previous item)

- Haven' figured out skinning the stand yet. Show who did my cabinets is booked out until November. I struggles with skinning the stand in place or not, with doorway limitations if I want an extra 1.5" of height I'll be skinning in place. Options: call different cabinet shop or just wait on the 1st vendor.

- Have not decided on powder coat vs. painting the stand yet. Powder coat costs more, since I'm not planning on a sump under it painting makes sense. I hate painting, powder coating sounds cool... yes guess which way I'm leaning.

- Aquascaping has me most concerned at this point. I want to do something nice just not sure where to start. Need to pickup some motor mix from Marco (Frank freebie time?) to play with, picked up a long masonry bit I was going to practice with drilling live rock - have the fiberglass rods already. Not sure if I should get some large shelve pieces or not from BRS.

Option 3. Removing the door and jamb from the doorway to create a wider opening.

You would need to remove the casing from both sides of the doorway. Pop the hinges and remove the door. Remove both of the jambs from the sides of the doorway.
This should increase the opening another 1-1/2" which would just give you enough clearance.
And with the door, casing and jambs removed, you wouldn't have to worry about hitting them with the stand and damaging them.

I know I would be much happier knowing that I have the stand built as I wanted it.
And a little extra work to get it in the room is inconsequential at that point.
