Maxreefer's Elos "The 2nd" (1 Viewer)

I really hate do it but I will have to do a major change.
Travelling for work becomes more intense and even having good people around taking care of the tank while I am gone usually if something happens it happens while I am gone. Coming back home and having to fix everything is just not fun anymore. I love my corals and never could imagine without but it makes no sense.
Therefore I am going to get rid of all my corals and redo the tank to a FOWLR.
I always loved Angels, Triggers etc. and hope they will make up for not having corals anymore. Some nice SW plants to decorate might be a nice things also

oh no... But i understand, i've often thought about doing the same thing...

i'm sure it will be one the best FOWLR tanks around, i mean your Reef tanks are impressive enough.

Sad to hear but I am sure that you will have a blast with the FOWLR.

Michael, have you considered just softies and lps? For the most part they are on autopilot (pun intended:) ) as much as FO...

Yeah, you'd have no problem with softies and most lps. You already have the equipment. I've got some orange ricordia you could have a couple of, they grow like weeds no matter what I do.

I am still undecided what to do....;)
After the little disaster while I was gone (alk drop and the water was to clean with Nitrates running at 0 for a while) the corals seems to come back a bit now. They are not there yet but it is getting better. Some are still in rough shape.

Quick pics I took this morning.

Lost 3/4 from the Birdsnest. I was able to save a small frag and it is growing again.

mmm if you have the slightest doubt dont do it...

I guess I had some doubts and going to wait for a while until I do the step.
The corals started to bounce back and I am pretty happy again how things move forward.

Birdsnest I had a big RTN issue with about 6 weeks ago. Fragged a small piece with 3 small branches and has been grown amazing quick since then

untitled-505-M.jpg

This is the leftover from quite a big colony I lost to the RTN issue also. Grows slow but is gaining color again

Shane (Re-Fin-Away). This is his I still have in my tank.

Wow! Incredible thread. I say don't do it - or at least stick with the softies and lps. You can still have so much color with those and if they'll keep themselves, I'd say go for it. I think that if you do sell your corals you'll regret it, and you don't want to have to deal with that. I sure wouldn't want to give up all those beautiful pieces.

On another note, I don't believe there was an answer to the question about whether or not the sides of the tank and lid are closed or not. I think the fixture and top is amazing, but I too am curious about if those triangular gaps are enclosed or open.

Also, another question that I didn't see answered - can these light fixtures be used on other tanks or only Elos models? I wonder how small they make those fixtures...

Thanks guys....

The triangular gaps are open but quite small. Any "normal" fish wouldn't find his way out through them but if you plan to keep Wrasse or similar they might.
I was planning on covering those small gaps with acrylic/glass pieces with a couple holes nicely drilled in but as I am not keeping any Wrasse so far there is really no need

I know in Europe they have them in various sizes Elos Europe. I don't know which models are imported in the US in the mean time.

Couple pics I forgot to post yesterday:

Wow, that first one is very pretty! I may have to look them up, I doubt they make them as small as I'm looking for but it's worth a shot, for sure!

Tank seems to be coming around, glad your still going! Nice to meet you at the swap also. :beerchug:

Nice meeting you also Garrett. You had a busy day there otherwise we could have chatted a little more.

Now this is weird....

My Tomini Tang loves to pick at rock to keep them clean but not really interested in any kind of algae (so far)

untitled-518-M.jpg

My Rabbit fish is a master in eating bubble algae (small issue a had a couple months ago) but never touched anything else (so far)

untitled-516-M.jpg

Added a small Yellow Tang a couple days ago. After a couple hours of "Who is the boss" game they are hanging out all 3 together all the time. Mr. Yellow decided to start snacking on some Bryopsis I have in the tank and suddenly the Tomini and Rabbitfish decided to start doing the same thing. They are all 3 eating the Bryopsis now.... Not all gone yet but some bigger patches disappeared in the mean time.
Just interesting to observe how fish can learn from each other or at least copy their behavior.

Not so much to report but I am taking a few new shots at the moment.

A few I just took. More to come later

I had this one for a real long time in several tanks and never had a lot of growth and was more brown then anything else.
Now for a couple months in the new tank he really took off and I would say he is now 5 times in size.

Pickup from Chad (Freshfish) last week. Thanks buddy!!

This Birdsnest was a real nice piece until I had some sudden RTN on several SPS a couple moths ago
but was able to save a mini frag about 2 small branches and now coming back with nice color and growth.
