What's the best way to move a tank at this time of the year tank has over 400 lbs of lr many with corals on them about 300 lbs of sand an 5-10 fish. Will be moving the tank from the cites to mankato

Sell off most of the corals keeping a frag of each. (Give those to a friend to watch) *Take the $$ of sales and not the risk of moving
Are you going to be in both places at once? Can you have a tank set up at new place?
Try to have the fish in temp tank in cities until tank in kato is running with as much existing water as you can.

I have a 125 set up in mankato. Will be moving 220 an setting that up after everything is good to go move it all over to the 220. My ? Is more just on keeping stuff warm on the move

full size van with rear heat would help, my van stays warm as can be back there. other than that cooler with warm pack in them as well. How many corals and how big of fish?

that trip is not so bad. I take it all the time with the frag swaps. just put the fish in larger bags with more water than average and put that in a cooler. add some warmers and your golden. just think about how the fish get to Minnesota to begin with.

Having moved live setups before I will +1 to selling as much as u can livestock wise. It's more peace of mind and is cheap insurance for uncertainities beyond your control.

If u do plan to move the livestock keep in mind things for
A 220 are going into half space so more tightly packed. If possible have a stock tank or some cheapo tank plumbed in to provide for more temp space.

Durin the move I will also recommend a fully covered heated van. For anything in buckets use the io type buckets with tight fitting lids, if there is a need to break real hard everything won't spill. For corals bag anything that can be bagged one coral per bag. If u have to pile them into a bucket or cooler without bags be careful about which types u mix, anything can happen in the dark; one important point.. I have only paid close attention to a Honda odyssey but I'd think others are similar... Don't keep any bucket /uninsulated container close to a vent or u will pretty much boil the contents. Odyssey has vents under the seats also

I've done 4 tank moves to Bemidji and back! Winter Break (2 years) and no issues. Heat running in the van, 5 gallon bucket.....Just be aware of things moving during the drive....ie packing a fish in a bucket with a piece of live rock is a bad idea.

If I had to do this....
1. A week or two before the move, head to fleetfarm, buy the 150G stock tank and fill it with saltwater, add heater, powerheads, skimmer if you got one etc.
2. Add prodibio and any live rocks you have to spare from your current system.
3. Wait 1-2 weeks.
4. Go to the cities with two cars. Upon arrival, bag up fish, bag up corals, put some (don't need them all) rocks in water in io buckets with tight lids. Send one car home immediately with someone that knows how to acclimate corals and fish into the stock tank. Put the rocks you sent in there too.
5. Pack up remaining rocks, tank and equipment in 2nd vehichle, head for home.
6. Figure out how to rig the light to hang it over the stock tank. Put remaining rocks in a brute can with water, heater and powerhead.
7. Take your time setting up the 220, moving rocks and fish first. Hang a cheap light for the fish (shop light) over the 220 once the fish are in there. As you remove rocks from the stock tank, put corals onto the bottom of the stock tank till you are ready to move them.
8. Once 220 is up and running with all the rocks, all the fish, and parameters stabilize, start moving corals. (like you brought them home from the store...)
9. All the while, you need to be doing water changes and monitoring parameters in the stock tank.

Kind of a hassle having a stock tank on the floor somewhere, but should be worth it in the end. You will be able to aquascape without stressing your fish and the move should be easier on them if they have a stable place to land sooner rather than later.

Good luck. Being that you asked, my guess is you have reservations about it and that is likely wise. Spend a little more, take a little more time, you should be glad in the end that you did.

I have a stock tank I could sell you cheap. Also I have a full size van and if you pay for food and gas+some frags and/or livestock I might be able to find time to help you. Let me know.

Are you moving just the tank or are you moving your whole house at the same time. If the latter, sell everything that is pretty easily replacable. Fish that don't need special orders, corals that can be replace locally. Keeping only the things your really would have a hard time replacing.

When moving your whole house there are so many other things to juggle at the save time that fish tank just adds extra stress. Bring your Liverock and equipment. Sell most everything else.

I'm pretty sure he just bought the 220 as a full setup from someone and is moving it to his house. He was looking for a 180 just a bit ago.

Ditch the sand don't even try to bring it. You wouldn't want to try to use it without cleaning it and recycling it once you get to Mankato anyways. Once you have disturbed the lower zones you would never put it in the tank right away, that's the most risky thing to move. Lugging the stuff is also murderous. Years ago, I had 800lbs that I had to remove from the basement ( not to keep just to get rid of ), never again as that was more work than everything else combined.

I bought this of Cl setting up a 90 gallon I have at home for a holding tank. Think I'm going to sell all the rock as I already have tons of rock . Was planning on fif on the sand an bringing most of the fish to lfs

Keep us posted on this move. I'd really be interested in tagging along (virtually) to see how this goes. Take lots of pictures if possible. I think it would be a good learning experience for everybody. :agree:

Also, I have a ton (well maybe 2 dozen) of moving blankets you're welcome to use if you want. :)

Will you be needing help with this? i assume your going to get this from the citeies, i live in kato, if it worked out i could help ya move it, i have moved tanks 100s of times

Totes, buckets, and a large vehicle work the best
If your selling the fish, what fish would you be selling?
