New 75g Reef (1 Viewer)

Picked up a new coral from the Fish Guy in Excelsior. No one was really sure what it is.. Billy said it was titled an artichoke coral on the list he ordered it from, looks to be some type of brain. The colors aren't very accurate as this wasn't the usual camera.

Bobber says hi too (he was waiting for his food) :)

Real nice tank, I like your caps.

Time for a big update:

-Nothing much happened between March and June, just growth.
-In July, picked up a AquaMedic Triple Doser and automated Ca/Alk/Mg dosing. Best. Purchase. Ever. Also replaced the 30g sump and EuroReef RS80 with a 40 breeder and SWC 250 due to impeller issues on the RS80 (it split like a banana). July was Equipment Upgrade Month apparently.
-In August, our starry blenny decided to start resting on the blue tip tenuis frag and it RTN'd down to a tiny little piece. Moved it into some shade with good flow and it is making a full comeback. This has been the ONLY coral that we have come close to losing, the other was a green acan colony that was never healthy. Also in August, I picked up a beautiful Kole tang from SWE to add more movement to the fish selection. It buddied up with our two barred rabbitfish and they cruise for algae now, along with the sole remaining blue chromis.
-In September, stopped dosing organic carbon (slowly) due to poor LPS color and size, mostly seen in our euphyllia and open brain. The hammers and brain reacted very well and we had another accidental fragging of the large hammer when trying to make more room for it. True to the reefer name, I took some super glue, aquamend, and some zip ties and combined the three ~14 head pieces back into one tree. There was a bit of a hair algae boom after this, but I've no problem with HA as it is easily removed manually and is a good food source for half of our fish. I did set up a media reactor with some GFO in response to the HA growth, but it is only at about 1/2 capacity and has only kept the HA from spreading, which is perfect.
-Somewhere in there (July? August?) we had a bryopsis outbreak again. Hate that stuff. Picked up a gallon of Kent TechM, switched it with the Two Part Mg and bam, problem solved.
-October has been good so far except the damn return pump wouldn't turn back on after feeding today. So I popped the backup pump in and stuck the 'busted' one in a dilute vinegar solution to soak for a day. No problemo.

We're running out of space, so I'm going to be posting a for sale thread later this week. Lots of $5 SPS and some nice zoanthids.

On With The Pictures!

Deepwater acro of some sort that is finally taking off.

Aussie red micro zoanthids from Li.

Armor of God zoanthids post-feeding.

Radioactive Dragon Eye zoanthids.

Rainbow? Multicolor micromussa.

One Itty bitty favia frag. The mother colony dropped two single-polyp babies a few months ago, so we mounted them individually and they've grown damn fast! Both have four or five full polyps now.
P1080212.jpg

Da Epic Orange Monti Cap. You know our tank isn't complete without one o' these.
P1080223.jpg

Grizzle Maze echino. Stiiiiiill growing, now at about four inches diameter.

Left side, low. Reefsitter Special blocking most of the view. Crazy growth pattern because we keep rotating the rock its on.

I’m not doing any editing to photos lately, just crop and resize, so they are not quite up to par with the quality seen so far throughout the thread. Do I particularly care? Nope.

Thanks for looking!

:firecracker:

Managed to get seven frags this size along with the original frag plug.

I decided to cut it up because it was encroaching on this poccillipora, which had encrusted onto the eggcrate as well...

Of course you can't get away scot-free when messing around in the tank, so I happened to make a new frag of the Reefsitter Special.

And this birdsnest is finally taking off after a long dormant period, probably due to the threat of being shaded by xenia.

Pictures by my cheap Panasonic P&S, couldn't find the nice camera today. Tank is sucking down Ca & Alk like nobody's business these days, I refill the 1gallon jugs about every three-four weeks.

Cheers

Longest page four ever...!

Major shake down included...
- 100g stock tank, 20g brute can, 18g rubbermaid bin
- three heaters, four pumps, half sheet of eggcrate, many misc PVC parts
- fresh RODI filters/resin, 180g+ of RODI water, 3/4 of a box of Reef Crystals
- four hours, six filter socks, four beach towels, two siphon hoses, bad taste in mouth
- only ONE accidental fragging... largest hammer colony went from 50 heads to 30 & 20 heads
- one intentional fragging... broke off an 8-inch-square chunk of monti cap (lower right side)
- one major loss... the male true percula clownfish

All in all it was a good couple of days that I hope to never have to do again (fat chance). The sandbed was cleaned as much as possible, the sump was completely drained and cleaned, the skimmer was completely disassembled and cleaned with vinegar, all powerheads and pumps were cleaned with vinegar as needed (coralline on maxijet mod is unreal), and all of the rocks and corals were cleaned of algae.

Picked up a juvenile true percula from the Mtka Petco today (thanks Jason) and managed to get back just as lights were coming on. It appears to be getting along pretty well with my female true perc so far as seen at the 1:45 mark of this video. Certainly doesn't mean they'll pair up but it is a good initial reaction.

And that's it for now.

Seriously this page will not end....

Most of the SPS are a bit bleached since there is still quite a bit of algae floating around, getting caught in a branch here and there. The large water changes and constant manual algae pruning certainly doesn't help the stress level. Pretty sure none of the SPS have grown in nine months. Lost a myagi tort and most of a blue tip tenuis over the summer, birdsnest caught a nice algae ball and rtn'd last week, pocci is just about garbage due to the algae stuck inside. (Sold that orange cap a looooong time ago btw.)

But the LPS are doing fine except for a slightly bleached euphyllia colony. The blastos have probably tripled in count in the last 9 months, the fungia continues to grow and I picked up a little green one as well. The open brain swallowed a turbo snail a few months ago and was open big yesterday before I took him out to scrub algae. Still a little PO'd as the photos show.

Can't wait til this tank comes down and i can give the rocks an acid wash. They must be saturated after five years in my tanks and who knows how long in others'. GFO is getting saturated within a week probably but I'll keep regenerating it until there isn't any left.

And I think my camera has reached its' usable limit cause these shots are with the same settings as all the other shots in this thread.

Cheers
