I'm wondering what you get from a membership to the club besides meeting people face to face.

I primarily use the forum to read different posts that are similar to issues that I have or I post a question myself or try to chime in from my experience. I also use the classifieds to find items that I'm looking for. Personally, I have thought about going to a meeting but haven't had the opportunity due to schedule conflicts and distance. I also don't spend the gas to drive across town for an item. Usually not worth it, so the point of "if you can drive across town to pick something up you can go to a meeting" doesn't apply to me. Plus picking something up does not take an hour. Not saying a meeting is a waste of an hour but with kids and schedules you don't always have free time.

I can see both sides but I'm wondering how having the classifieds section open to everyone hurts the club as a whole. Sure you get the people that sign up just to sell/buy something, but as a seller/buyer you can decide for yourself whether to buy or sell to that person.

Closing the classifieds will probably be a good thing for me right now to stop some impulse buying until I can make it to a meeting. Either way I don't have a choice on that and not sure what I would be getting for the $30 membership fee.

There were two main arguments at the time: (1) Get people to contribute and participate; and (2) Trying to avoid shady traders who had screwed a number of members, which tended to happen less for regular members.

Regardless, this was a decision that was debated and voted on at the buisiness meeting. What the BOD has done here is simply to honor what was debated and decided by the consensus. If you don't like it, this really isn't the forum for it. A buisiness meeting is the forum to reconsider the prior vote and revote if it didn't work out as expected.

Maybe there is a solid reason for this, but the way I see it, why not live and let live?
Because "live and let live" turns into "live and let leech". If TCMAS is going to thrive it needs to cut the fat, the fat being people who are only here for themselves and never provide value to the club. Typically those people post once or twice if at all and only use the classifieds.
I just think that this rule is a bad idea for the club because it excludes new people. It makes this club exclusive and makes me feel like since I am not a "member" then I am not important. What incentive is there for people to become members if we act like newcomers are unwelcome.
What does any of what we're talking about have to do with new people? I have no idea where you're coming up with this. The classifieds have nothing to do with new members or the club being exclusive. You're still able to see and do everything else.

So question for all you that want the classifieds closed to non members, forget about the $30 fee, forget about the meetings. How does closing the classified section down benefit the club? And how has the open classified section hurt the club?

I guess I should add that I've had all great experiences since I've started. Not one shady person.

Apparently people who only use the classifieds hurt the club...no reason given for that, they just do apparently.

The one valid reason is to avoid shady people and scams, make the classifieds a more trusted place.

Trading or selling between two people may not help the club, but it very rarely does harm either; what it does do is it brightens at least two people's days and one reefer gets to meet another (which can in turn lead to people becoming more active in the club as they meet more people they like to talk to.)

Boom. Done. Well said.

its not about lurking for a deal cause im not in it to make a membership happy at any cost. my goal is to in-prove my knowledge and give back to the hobby as others have done for me. i dont have to be part of the high society of paid members to do that.
i have no problem paying and fees to help sustain the functionality of a club as i am a paid member of our local club down here. just obviously with your city being so much larger than ours there are more members with diffrent goods to offeri have family in morristown near fairbault so i could attend a meeting if we were up visiting or something.

i am just trying to look at this from the outside and see where the "value added" aspect is for new prospective members or membership for that matter other than personal interaction.

next thing the membership will only want to let paid members into your swapmeets or fests .

i understand you all had a club before the forum came along. i am just looking at it objectively from the outside as a non paid member and dont see what i could learn or how i could grow without an easy entry aspect to your club thru the classifieds.

i am a small voice outside your large tidepool up there and i just wanted to give a diffrent aspect for you to consider.

thanks for your time

Those in disagreement are only in disagreement because they will no longer be able to enjoy the immense cost savings associated with being a member of TCMAS...now they actually have to put in work to enjoy those savings.

The horror! ---Edited for language----- Seriously, I cant believe all the people here that think their opinions matter.

If you voted for Romney and Obama got elected (or vice versa!) but you didnt vote, who cares what you have to say. Same thing applies here. You didnt vote even though you had the chance to have your voice heard. You didnt speak up then so shut up now. Or, if you did vote and you werent in the majority, well then now you truely know what a democracy is.

Wow Brent that is the rudest, most vile, disgusting thing I have ever read. It's like you think you're a superior human being or something.

I'm in disagreement and I will be able to enjoy the immense cost savings because I will pay, get your facts down first before you say crazy things.

Are there any plans to expand meeting sizes for Jan, Feb and March?

I'm guessing there will be a significant increase in people wanting to attend meetings. I just checked upcoming meetings and some limit number of people. Maybe a LFS would host? Not complaining, just interested to know if plans exist. Thanks.

Wow, I think we all need to relax a little. I think it is worth noting that we can cast an absentee ballot for the presidential election. Kind of funny that I can vote "remote" for the leader of this country, but not TCMAS rules. Maybe a future proxy system would be a good idea.

Would my opinion even matter if I was there? That's pretty rude. Wouldn't want to be there if you were that saying stuff like that.

I don't look at the classifieds as a cost savings. Sure things are cheaper on there but the selection of different saltwater specific products is better than elsewhere. Plus you do get to meet other people that you have something in common with but don't have to commit the hour or two to it.

Even if I was there I wouldn't be able to vote. Would not have had the 2 meetings in 6 months required to vote. So far I've only been on the forum for less than 1.5 years and every meeting that was close I had other obligations.

What does one get from being a full member as opposed to just a member on the forum? (besides the classifieds section)

Just to be clear, I wasnt there to vote. Those that took the time to show up and vote got to make the decision and it is ours to live with it.

Sounds like people dont like democracies...or do only when they are part of the majority.

If bods/mods didn't want opinions this thread would have been closed a long time ago....
