Next Meeting?!?!?!?!?!...!!! (1 Viewer)

Maybe we can get a new eye candy thread started in the public forums to keep everyone busy for a little bit.

Full access has always been based on attending a meeting or not, the deal has just been sweetened by moving the classified section over to the "members only section".
For all the new people please give the change some time. If you knew the club you would know there are other ways to find corals and equipment. I have seen over and over again where members offered corals or equipment outside of the classifies to people new to the hobby.
As a seller I think this change is for the better and over time will benefit the club. Sellers will now know that the buyer has made some effort to become active in the hobby/club and hopefully will take care of the livestock they are selling.
A number of post were about meetings, as the host you can limit the size/time of a meeting. Hosting a meeting does not mean you have to throw your doors open to the world. Also you do not need some beautiful established tank to host a meeting. I have been to meetings with nano tanks all the way up to 450gals, all very cool in their own way. If you are just starting out, hosting a meeting is a great way to get suggestions and ideas on your setup. If unsure about your "meeting" just check with the BOD. Hopefully with this new incentive the meeting calendar will fill up.

You said yourself that Brian is not caught up on registering members, how does that make it acceptable to make these changes especially for those people who assume they are now members because they attended a meeting yet suddenly got locked out anyway? That's just bad business.

Your point has been made, what more are you looking for??

ty clint i feel much better, so if im not mistaken... you only have to attend 1 meeting? not 2? Its really not that big of a deal since FTR is so close.... but if i need to drive north, it costs me BIG BUCKS! (considering im currently RENTING a handicap accessable van) who knows how long i'll be in this death chair on wheels..........

To those of you who know me...... I was in a car accident friday, and shattered my legs. They must heal and be re-broke, then heal again. Sometimes life throws a curve ball, glad im still alive.

Im sad to see the limiting going on...... I couldnt begin to tell all of you how benifical the FS/trade forums have helped me. Went from 30gal to 55 to 75 to 95 with the use of that forum

Sorry for venting.

I've come to realize.... I need to do MY part :beerchug:

I would like to attend a meeting. Is it possible to put the locations on the club calender?

Meetings are generally offers from members to host meetings. If members do not offer to host meetings, then we have less meetings. The calendar is up to date for any upcoming meetings AFAIK.

The club has an annual business meeting, speaker events and we're going to try and coordinate more workshops.

Attending a meeting is not the only way to get membership. You can host a meeting, coordinate an event or give back to the club in some way. The BOD also has the right to extend membership to an individual as they see fit. This is typically reserved for people who give back to the club in other ways or have extreme circumstances.

I'm not looking for anything other than perhaps acknowledgment from those that were part of this decision that the execution and planning was lacking.

As stated, I am not against the change, only the way it's been done.

I am not aiming to pick on anyone, certainly not Brian. He has explained to me how it works. Let's just say, I'm glad a new system will be implemented. :)

It may have been more prudent to establish a cut off date, rather than immediate banishment for non-members. Some people had deals in progress, active for sale threads going that are now cut off, things of that nature.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate circumstances. Here's hoping for a full and swift/less painful recovery.

+100

The BOD should have gave us a date that this change was happening. And had a meeting before it to give everyone a chance to keep what they already had. Instead of taking the classifieds away, then telling us how to get them back. So then we are without them until someone decides to host a meeting. Good idea, Bad planning/implementing.

This was on the agenda for the business meeting that was held yesterday. Everyone had equal right to show up and provide their feedback on the topic and how to implement it. There was not a motion by the members to allow a grace period. IMO, there was an urgency to put this in place. Once voted on, it enters the bylaws immediately.

This meeting had been planned and talked about for over two months. It was probably the most high profile meeting since I've been part of this club.

How about my original questioning of the bylaws? The bylaw states that TCMAS sponsored events (frag swaps?) will count for people to attend to become members. But today the word is that frag swaps do not count. Will the bylaw now be changed? Just looking for clarity here so we all know exactly what is and is not allowed and expected.

Yes, bylaws were amended.

5.1 Special Requirements for Sections 1.5, 1.6 and 5.1
Sections 1.5, 1.6, and 5.1 may only be amended with the approval of 75% of those
members with voting privileges present at a business meeting.
5.2 General Requirement
Unless otherwise provided in Section 5.1, the bylaws may be amended by a
majority vote of those members with voting privileges present at a business
meeting.

strict interpretation of the bylaws would have 'deleted' any non member accounts, I guess...

3.9 General Duties of the Board
The Board of Directors must ensure TCMAS provides a web forum, listserv, or
other means for Members to communicate with each other electronically

Im against the whole decision, and ill tell you why.

As a newcomer about six months ago, I depended on the for sale thread to purchase my tank, equipment, livestock, etc. As a college student, I just couldn't afford purchasing this stuff from the shops, although ive donated plenty to my lfs.
My argument is... That if you cut off the for sale thread to members only, you will lose the vast majority of, shall we say, noobs. Now, the noobs are important to help veteran reefers unload there tanks to upgrade to another. They become more active in the hobby because theyre constantly checking this forum for items to purchase. They help members distribute corals and livestock outside of what stores provide, which allows for more diversity in our tanks. Im not saying that only beginners use that thread, but I would guess non members make the majority of the purchases. And keeping that thread available to everyone is beneficial to everyone. Just try selling your tank on the now private thread, and im sure you will have significantly less response.

It isnt fair to see a thriving thread of the forum and close it off just to attract members. It will not have the same success as an exclusive thread, because it doesn't attract the much needed beginner.

Having said this, the 75 gallon reef im enjoying right now because of the dozen or so members that Ive done business with. I rely on them to get my reef going and they rely on me to unload goods so they can upgrade and expand the hobby. The for sale thread just wont be the same after this decision.

Im not a member, but im on here 10 times a day and want my voice heard. And I would like to become a member, but its a little intimidating going to one of the meetings at someone's house when Im 20 and dont regularly socialize with people twice my age. Oh well, ill have to leave the comfort zone for a bit.

Thanks for clearing it up. I just wanted to be clear on exactly where things stood as of now.

You make a good point I've thought of here. Those that aren't super social don't feel welcome or comfortable going to a meeting full of strangers. And are less likely to attend a meeting unless they know someone. One easy way to get to know people/members is to buy or sell something with them. Then you start to know people. Without that stepping stone so to speak attending a meeting as a complete stranger/noob is intimidating.

Oh well, consensus is we should have attended last night's meeting in order to be heard. I bet that would have made....well absolutely no difference in the outcome.

ok so i didnt want to read 4 pages of arguing to find the answer to the thread topic haha. when is the next meeting? where? time? i would like to attend. please let me know im willing to do my part and become a member.

I am a newbie that has been researching for the last 1 yr on a reef tank. I also agree that taking away the sale/buy section is a bad idea.

I am not a poor college kid but knowing that I can get into the hobby without dropping an arm and leg was important. Buying equipment on craigslist is tough. Its tough to search for all the things you want to buy. You know you can buy 1/2 dozen different type of pumps but try manually searching through craigslist for that without spending hours. Here, at least everything you need are consolidated.

Second, is it a possbility to split the forsale section into two sections. 1 section that is available to all people where people can list equipment only and then the other section for lifestock. I think you want people to buy equipment so they can get into the hobby but maybe give them an incentive to attend meetings to get deals on lifestock life cheap frags. I also think it will be hard for members to get rid of equipment if they can only sell it to members while im sure they can get rid or trade lifestock listing only for members area.

Either mrbills' april 30th or I'm trying to work something up within the next 3 weeks. I need to check with my wife when she gets back into town and check our schedules.

Would you like to have one yourself next week instead? ;)
