Next Meeting?!?!?!?!?!...!!! (1 Viewer)

I pay a yearly fee to call myself a MAS member. And they do not require you attend any meetings. Perhaps this is another means of achieving what you are after.

Lets be real, just because I show up at a frag swap or come to 1 persons house and sign a piece of paper doesn't me you no longer "don't know who you are dealing with"

Where do I send $$$ PrePay for my yearly membership :beerchug:

MAS penalizes members by making them pay more for auction items, and charging them more to put things in auction. Perhaps Non members would get a 25% upcharge at frag swaps. that way you will have to do the secret hand shake and flash your members only jacket in order to =get the TCMAS Member Discount

The forum is an extension of the club mandated by the bylaws to give members the ability to communicate within the club.

The club and it's members are based on events and meetings. A motion was asked if the club should move to a more web based focus and it was unanimously turned down. We're not trying to compete with reef central, reef2reef, nano-reef and others.

First of all I would like to thank those members who took the time and effort to attend the meeting.
I didn't go to the meeting for personal reasons and therefore I accept and respect the decisions made by normal members just like you and me.

It seems for some (not pointing at anyone!!) TCMAS and the forum is just a form of mini-craigslist. Especially when it comes close to a frag swap you see many many new forum members and others who are never on the forum or club activities show up to sell or buy livestock.
I think when you go the extra mile to organize or attend an event and become a member you get some benefits others don't have and this is a good thing.
Yes the members get first pick now but if you are a non-member you still can go to a frag swap to buy whatever you see and like.

I am not a very social gathering person either and when I just joined the forum I was quite nervous also to go to a meeting. I asked somebody I saw at the frag swap and have been talking quite a bit to if he was going. He was and I asked if he could introduce me a bit and to make me feel comfortable. So I went and you know what... I had a great time and it was really nice to get to know some great people.

I don't know exactly if the new rules took place immediately as I am a member but did all the non-members got locked out from the FS/FT section as of today?
If so maybe there should be a short "grace period" for the newbies to have the chance to attend a meeting. Something to consider by the BOD.

oh boy, I keep going on and on here..Sorry guys...
Just one more thing. If we have about 600 members and so far only 12 meetings or so planned that would mean some event organizers might see 50 people and more to show up. We really would need more events as I think not everybody can host that many people at once...

just my 0.2 cents

Michael

Ugh, as Brian already mentioned. To those newbies that want to get into the hobby, it is highly recommended that you do some research and chat with folks before making any purchases commitments.

This comment bothers me, I have been lurking on this forum for several months, doing my research and looking at what kinds of things the sale section offered. Then I found someone who I wanted to PM about an acan frag and created a membership! Had their personal email been offered in their profile maybe I would have gone that route, but since I know many from other forums who are also on this forum I decided it'd be cool to join.

So if the current ways were implemented months ago there would have been no reason for me to join. You need to reel people into your club by first joining and getting their feet wet, then they become addicted like a crack fiend and become a full blown member who volunteers for the club.

Bryan,

First, thank you for your patience and time you've spent on these threads explaining/clarifying what occurred at the business meeting as best you can.

Second, I know Ange volunteered to help with member data entry; but I'd also like to help with that so we can get the list updated as soon as possible.

If there's an issue with sign-in sheets that were not turned in, I can play courier this week/weekend to collect. Or I can help pick up the existing sign-in sheets and help transfer them to Excel as a csv file as you mentioned.

Heck, what if we have a meeting at my place this weekend and we just data crunch memberships into the database? With the wife's chemo finished, they are out of town in Chicago until end of March. So I have time to help with data entry if you need it - I just want to help get the membership database up to date.

Cheers,
Glenn

PS: Congrats on the new baby, hopefully your getting a few hours of sleep at night. ;)

I will also help on the membership data entry, let me know

We're honestly not interested in taking money from any member or non-member. This is a non-profit club. The only Donation we would love is your time and knowledge.

1 year = 8,765.81277 hours

All we're asking is for a couple of those

WOW! well put Bryan! After reading this, I/we need to stop complaining!
The bylaw amendment is bumping DOWN from 2 to 1 meeting PER YEAR!
Also the fact that NO ONE gets paid to do this, its voluntary

I must apologize for venting (been a rough weekend)

This whole thread makes me want to DONATE MY TIME MORE!

feel like I need a shower, a :beerchug: and a therapist ;)

where do i find on the site where meetings are posted?

I've only got one hand as I'm holding my 6 week old that was just pissed at me for being on the internet so this will be a little shorter.

Current meetings are on the calendar which you can find in the forum navigation above. I'm going to try and make the whole meeting process clearer and how to host a meeting. Just need a little time.

The club doesn't need money, we need people to come to meeting and contribute. The decisions were made at the meeting, and the ideas were discussed/presented beforehand. Rather than complain and secondguess decisions WE as the members (not the BoD) made, do something.

The classifieds thing also serves a dual purpose. People are less likely to rip someone off if they have to show their face at an annual meeting, same goes for keyboard commandos...

I would also like to add. sorry.. This change will also PREVENT noobs from making newbie mistakes- by doing research first. That "PRETTY coral" might not be suitable for YOUR CURRENT SYSTEM :beerchug:

BTW: CONGRATS BRYAN! I've got a bun in the oven too! ;)

First i have NO ISSUE with the current change, i just wanted to point out the fact that it is kinda nice for our "out of state" members to be able to post their frags they are bringing to the frag swap to sell ahead of time for pre-sales. Any thoughts to making a separate thread for the "swap" for pre sales?

I mentioned this problem in the other thread started on this topic. Not only out of state people but out of state vendors also. Living in Bismarck North Dakota there is no way i can keep membership up now as they only meeting that is worth driving that far is the fall and sprig frag swaps and those dont count anymore. I also know that their are a few people that live in Fargo that are active on this forum and one that lives in grand forks. I not only watch for coral frags that I like but I watch for deals on dry goods from people redoing setups or getting out of the hobby. Dry goods exspecially can be shipped really cheap from Minnesota to Bismarck and it would be sad if I could no longer watch that just cause I can make a meeting.

It may have been more prudent to establish a cut off date, rather than immediate banishment for non-members..

Banishment... holy smokes people, its the classifieds section, its not the end of the world. Its not banishment from TCMAS, if not having access to those sections is really that big of a deal that tells me the only reason the people complaining came to TCMAS was for the classifieds.

Although i agree it was a bit fast in its implementation, simple fact is, want those benefits of the club... then attend a meeting and join the club. Otherwise you have Local Fish Stores that will gladly assist you, not to mention Craigslist.

TCMAS is not a glorified classifieds add, I am glad those forums were moved.

and for the meeting regularity questions, typically you can count on 2 TCMAS meetings a month, one at the beginning, one towards the end. That has been our cycle since i joined anyway. we should double check the meetings list in the members area and cross check that with the public calender and make sure its continually up to date as im pretty sure a bunch of those meeting slots are filled or being filled.

Word choice of banishment was perhaps inappropriate. You didn't miss my point though. :)

And let's not kid ourselves....For sale sections of pretty much all forums related to hobbies like this are a large part of the forums. They generate traffic, help members out, etc. No, they are not what make or break a forum of this nature, but they hold an important place regardless.

Exactly. This has been one of my main points all along, implementation was a tad fast. Beyond that, I do intend to attend a meeting and join the club.

You are wrong on one point though, we don't all have local fish stores to help us out.

I know this is run by volunteers, and I appreciate your efforts. As someone who only recently joined and attended a meeting almost two months ago, I just wish that meeting attendance records had been made current before cutting folks off. I have met the requirements, but am still not able to access those areas until the data gets entered.

Guy9smiley2 was just at my place to pick up some stuff and I gave him a free frag of hammer coral. Does this count as a meeting? I can have him sign in if that would help;)

Sorry...just trying to bring some humor to this thread. My point being...this club is about relationships. They may start out as an online contact but many end up as face-to-face interactions that only help keeping this hobby and the club thriving. IMHO both are very important.
