Noel's 58 Gallon Build (1 Viewer)

Thank sfor the heads up on the pump--I already purchased a quietone 4000--went a little bit higher as I'm going to be using a SCWD and heard that these reduce the pressure of the pumps.

I'm running an ehiem 1260 on one of my tanks, absolutely silent.

yeah silent is definitely a big plus on this end---nothing like watching the television only to hear gurgling and vibrations! :beerchug: We'll see how this plays out--I've kind of gone on the cheaper end for some things, but my motto is:

"We can always upgrade later!"

So today I got to thinking after doing up some quick figures as to how much everything else is going to cost me...

Oh boy...

Here's what's on my list: Kalk Reactor (which early next year I'm going to buy a Ca Reactor to supplement), ATI PowerSun (NOT going with the powermodule, same as the powersun, just not as "showy") Ecotech Vortech MP20, salt, hydrometer and all the whole works

Yeah $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So then I got to thinking some more things. The one thing that is really getting to me is the fact I don't have water in my tank. It sucks. I am staring at an empty glass box, though pretty so far, in my living room. It's pretty boring and I wish there were fish and corals that I could stalk. If I can do something now that requires water, I will feel that much more excited. Then I got to think some more--what about the live rock? I searched the boards and came up with this idea (borrowed of course)

I'm going to put in an order to Marco Rocks for 40lbs of dry base rock (unless someone can sell me locally for the same price or lower??) within the next couple of weeks and then also get a few lbs of live rock which will carefully be screened for ugly anemones and undesireable algae. I will cook this rock for about 12 weeks (my estimated time to when I'll actually be able to stock this tank :-( ..)

Ok,

So tomorrow I am going to be receiving my 5 stage 100GPD reverse osmosis and a QuietOne 4000 pump which will be my return. Basically all I will need to do now is complete my plumbing (which this ought to be interesting). The other thing I am in need of is a reverse osmosis feed adapter. Does anybody know where I can go to find this? I went to HD and they didn't have it, or I just wasn't looking in the right place.

I don't know what a RO feed adapter is, but it is generally accepted to be a bad idea to hook your RO up right to your tank.

For rocks, check out Bulk Reef Supply. No need to cook for 12 weeks. Do an acid bath or just soak them for a couple days in fresh water then put them right in.

The RO isn't going to be directly hooked up to the tank. It's going to be hooked up to a resevoir. A feed adapter connects to the plumbing beneath the sink.

Ah, that I understand. BRS has them too. Get a refractometer not a hydrometer - also available from BRS at a good price.

I wish I got a commission ....

Not really sure what you mean but are you looking for one of those adapters?

Actually something like this--found it on marine depot--but seriously after shipping it's just not worth it.

since BRS is in golden valley--do we have to order online or can we pick up there? Just curious. I mean seriousl, UPS ground shipping from golden valley to minneapolis? Seems silly. Obviously haven't heard of BRS before (Think of me like a newbie..yeah)

You have to order online and at checkout you tell them you will pick it up.
They will charge for shipping but when you get there they will refund the shipping to your credit card

Thanks for the heads up on BRS--they have tons of useful stuff. Next few purchases from them will be the dual carbon/phosphate reactor and some dry deco rocks.

Just an edit about the Phosphate reactor--it's amazing to me at how many things have changed. I'm still impressed and boggled about the new advances. Though phosophates aren't "new", I just never understood what phosphates were--in fact I didn't understand it until I took Environmental Science last semester!!! I always wondered *WHY* my previous tank looked so UGLY! It was just an algae breeding haven from hair to bubble algage...and also I never understood in using Carbon. I never did on my 75gallon and still wondered "Why is my tank yellow?".

I love doing things right...

I first want to mention that last week was pretty hectic in the weather as we can see below when I was outside smoking at work during my break:

Back to the build:

So Yesterday I had received my Reverse Osmosis which I had purchased on Ebay--it is a 6 stage reverse osmosis/ Deionize system that came with a 3.2 gallon tank and I had also bought an 18 gallon acrylic aquarium by Rachelle. If anyone has seen their tank--it's WICKED! I was almost late to pick up my package for the RO before UPS closed and in fact, as soon as I walked in at 1 minute to 8 they had locked the doors so nobody else could be assisted until Monday morning.

I had also received my package from bulk reef supply (too lazy to go pick it up), and the adapter I had bought to connect my RO/DI was too big (sad), but I did like the 2-way diverter's for the quick connects and also the tank adapter i had bought--I can already tell i'm going to be a repeat customer of theirs.

After spending the first initial hour last night in farting around with all of the tubing, I had stood up to crack open a beer and take a picture of my "thus far" accomplishment.

Another fifteen minutes or so was wasted on cleaning beneath the kitchen sink, moving the products and whatnot to the otherside of the room so I had a clean workspace. Here it is after 80% completion of the installation.

What isn't pictured is the Waste Line--which I drilled a hole into the horizontal drain and then connected the saddle valve to it--I'm impressed on my drilling capabilities :)

Then for the longest time up until this morning, It had boggled my mind in how to connect the RO/DI to this:

IMG_0319.jpg

I ended up finding it at ACE Hardware--a 3/8" by 3/8" x 1/4" EZ Connect "T" Adapter. Since i Don't have copper piping beneath my sink, I had to go this route instead of one of those self piercing valves. Besides, if memory serves me right--the last time I had done one of those wasn't too successful and it had leaked.

The only thing that concerns me now is I can hear a slight gurgling come from the RO Membrane as it enters through the Auto Shut Off valve and into the 5th stage, or Carbon filter, of the system. I had turned the unit off and teflon taped all of the threads and made sure that the OD tubing was pushed all the way in as well as check all of the quick-connect fittings. They are all super solid and tight--but there is STILL air either inside the membrane or being sucked in. I have no idea what to do--any ideas?

ONce when that was all completed, I had also purchased on ebay two float switches which is going to be controlled by my aquacontroller. The first switch or "switch 1" is set to a low-level setting...so when it is "open" it will then turn on an aqualifter pump to fill with H20--or depending on the pH a second aqualifter will be connected to a kalkwasser reactor. The 2nd float switch will be in the RO reservoir next to the aquarium--still looking on what to purchase for that, but so far I came up with a 5 gallon polycarbonate rubbermaid storage container which comes to around $40--this will fit inside a a cheap $80 ottoman I plan on purchasing from Target--and no it's not going to a place to sit (or is it?). When the reservoir is low, the switch will be "Open" and then turn on the solenoid (which I had purchased two on ebay but now I have to find a 110 Volt to 24VDC transformer--knew I should've looked for AC! but they were like $5)

Anyway, so this is what I had picked up from Rachelle (thanks again :greenguy:)

and here is a picture of my almost completed sump setup

As you can tell--I'm going to be using an ETSS reef devil with the beckett modification as a protein skimmer. Got it for cheap which is good--would like a euroreef or a conical skimmer...but save that for DOWN THE ROAD!

In the reflection you can see me holding a beer for accomplishment. Things are starting to look real good.

Nice build log, things are coming along pretty well.

Also, thanks to MAXreefer on that tidbit about BRS; it about 5 minutes from home and was wondering about how to just pick stuff up from there.

Keep on working it, you'll get water and rock in there soon enough!!!

Hey thanks--yeah it's nice to have a local business like BRS here in the cities. I guess I always thought EVERYTHING was always housed in California! Two paychecks from now, I'll be buying some more stuff. Unfortunately rent has to get paid this paycheck

OK--so after about 2 hours of searching and researching about what to use as my ATO reservoir, I was originally just going to buy a rubbermaid or sterilite tub. Then got to reading about the possibility of leaching chemicals into the water. Well, thank God there's The Container Store in Edina! I found this which fits the dimensions I am looking for without costing me an arm and a leg. It's a "keep box for bulk food storage container." It does say "dry food" but it doesn't say tha tliquids can't be used. I'll post more later.

RectangularBulkFoodStrg_l.jpg

It will be the 16.9 quart sized food container and it is BPA free, so it's safe for food and won't leach chemicals. This will hold just over 4 gallons of water. Since I live in a small apartment, a 55 gallon trashcan simple WONT work for my application. I don't want an ugly trashcan staring at me in the living room--eww, not to mention it throws up ugly over aesthetics. This container is going to be installed inside of a cheapt $80 "leather" ottoman which I'm going to buy at target. So far that's the plan.

I'll have to see where funds leave me after this weeks paycheck, but I may be able to get it and then also purchase some 1/4" quick connect bulkheads so I can install the second float switch and get this project all taken care of.
