So I decided I'm ready to move up to a Innovative Marine 60 gallon short reef all in one from my current 28G cube, who out there is ready to warn me of all the rookie errors I should try to avoid? I already have the new tank sitting in the garage new in the box once we take the Christmas tree down there will be some space to plan the tank into. I'm looking to unbox the new tank and water test it some weekend soon, just need to find some help and the time to get it done

Biggest rookie error for me has been making sure the tank is level! I went from a 29g to a 90g cube, it was off by a bit, filled it up, then it was off by a lot! Had to drain it, shim it and fill it back up. I had a thread started on the very same issue a couple of weeks ago I believe. I cant wait to see the end result and keep us informed!

I just read over this post, thanks I'll watch for the issue before and after filing. How did it go for you as far a cycling your new tank did you let it run for awhile before moving old stuff into new tank? I'm wondering what it would be like to move clean healthy live rock from old tank to new? reuse some of the live sand from the tank bottom?

If you just move contents from A to B then there is no cycle. It can all be done in an hour or so. The only wildcard is the substrate. Add the new rinsed substrate first then put your old on top. Your old substrate if deeper than 1 inch, I'd only reuse the first inch. Put you substrate on top of the new.

If your going to add rock, I'd cycle the new rock seperately in a tub/bin then add at a later date.

Thank you David I had thought this to be my plan Ive had some rock cycling thur in an extra tank for a few weeks already just in case I needed it. my real concern was the sand I plan /"need" to add more sand there was less than 1" in the smaller tank the new footprint is much larger. This is still in planning I have time to avoid mistakes!

Sounds like you have under control. 1" is nothing to be concerned with. Just put old sand back on top. Should go smoothly.

David,

In a brand new tank, would you still cycle the rock outside of the tank?

theres no need to. Just an upgrade where you are going to add rock to additional livestock. You don't want to risk a mini cycle with livestock. I typical cycle it outside anyways becuase I can get that going long before the tank and plumbing is ready.

If you have say a 100g tank and you adding just 1 or 2 new rocks it's not a big deal and can add dead rock right away the existing bacteria should be able to handle the additional load only I would wait say a week after an upgrade before adding it. But if you adding 50% new then yes please cycle seperate.
