People having thoughts of leaving tcmas read (1 Viewer)

the forum still shows you how many have logged on that day, at the bottom

Only Michael will know for certain, ive just noticed the "users logged in today" list took a leap for a bit there.

today, 260 people have visited the site... currently 28 members and 10 non members are on the site.

i guess im unable to relate to this thought myself, when i joined TCMAS, i went to a meeting within 2 months, and the meeting i went to was in Blaine (i cant remember the name of the persons house now, but Angie will it was where we met and i called her Carpenter!)

The meeting we went to, the host only had a 29g biocube up and running, nothing fancy, had some cyano, we talked about the tank a little then we sat and just BS'ed about everything. I soaked in lots of knowledge, asked a few questions and left enriched.

Thats my take on attending a meeting. If it still makes you uncomfortable, and you dont want to go to one for this or that reason or you cant make one, like guy9 said, become a TCMAS Supporter for $30 a year!

That meeting was umdivx - in fact that was his first meeting - how about that...never been to a meeting but he decided to just throw one himself.

Was a great meeting - I recall I BS'd more about HDMI, electronics and such more than I did about tanks.

That is also the meeting Hypertechs socks with sandals pic came from. The picture behind his sandals - those are umdivx's little girls.

i have really been trying my darnest to take this "paying for access to the classifieds" mentality out of peoples minds. You are NOT paying for access to the classifieds, that is one of the MANY benefits that come with the priviledges of TCMAS Membership or becoming a TCMAS Supporter. You have access to the members only area, where the workshops will be listed and the giveaways will be listed, not cheap giveaways either. Not only access to those areas but able to partake in them as well! You also can get free table space at the Expos, acccess to special members only postings and offers... really the classifieds is just a fraction of what paying for the supporter option really gives you.

Like ive said more times than i care to, if you only want to partake in the classifieds benefit, that is your choice... but this is surely not 'just' what you are paying for.

AGREED! Most keep looking at this as paying for access to the classifieds as they can see something tangible from before that is now restricted.

What members don't see and really cannot appreciate are the monthly giveaways, the workshops etc as they never experienced them before - therefore they don't know what they are missing.

We didn't enact them until after the forum change so (perhaps we should have so you all could get a taste....I digress....)- you really would want to become a member just for those alone. They are free to enter to win and free to attend as long as your a member.

Also a suggestion, if you are not comfortable going to a meeting I would suggest partnering up with a club member *So you know someone there* or PM MOD/BOD who is attending and introduce yourself to them and I'm sure they will introduce you to others.

I for one am always happy to meet up with/show around/introduce anyone - just shoot me a PM. Trust me, you wouldn't be the first and I love introducing new members around!

Forgot about that lol have only been using the "new post" section for a while now and I don't think it shows that statistic there.

I can attest to this being 100% true times infinity! Angie's good like that!

I am always encouraging new people in the hobby that I meet to join this site and attend a meeting. I think is the single most beneficial step in understanding and succeeding in this hobby. Sure, paying the $30 supporter fee will get you full access but you will not get the experience of attending a meeting and meeting new people and participating in the discussions.

TCMAS is not just about getting good deals, that is certainly a mentality we want to change. It was voted on long ago to have it this way, and it was voted on by TCMAS members.

I didn't say it was. I am simply giving the perspective of someone new and how the classifieds help draw people in. If you notice, I am still here and posting and learning. Why am I not doing that on other forums? This is local. I came here for the info, but the classifieds drew me here as well.

And to the replies about meetings, etc... Keep in mind, the majority of brand new people to the hobby are not as gung ho and eager to chat about the hobby until they start to get a grasp of it (case in point here). How do they get a grasp of it? Researching and doing. The classifieds make it easier to get into to do, then be able to feel more comfortable discussing the topic.

With regards to the pay option, I understand that it is for more than just the classifieds, however, one needs to consider the average person's view, not what you think they should see it as. The analogy would be if a store said you had to pay to become a member before seeing what is actually offered. The average person would say no, despite the fact that the store's staff may be incredibly knowledgeable in the topic/sector the store is geared towards.

I am not arguing that anything needs to change. I am simply offering different perspectives (perhaps as a devil's advocate). :jester:

Sounds kinda like SAMs club. Can't go in without a membership. Lol. But a lot of money is to be saved. Now if SAMs club had a meeting option.... That would be interesting

Rigwald- glad to see you still hopping around on this forum with th change that happened. When I first got on this forum, their were no classifieds for non members at all! Not even a pay option.
Most placed that require a membership of some sort for classifieds will usually have some of the best deals around.

Hi Rigwald, glad you are still posting/learning. Again this is all merely a conversation, we all know it is not a argument for change. I'm not sure what you mean by "gung ho" most people I meet at the meetings are calm and collective. You haven't attended a meeting so please do not assume we are overloaded with caffeine and eager to get you started. This hobby is about patience, not how fast we can get you "Hooked" in. You don't always have to be prepared to show off your knowledge and classifieds IMO doesn't help you get a better grasp of the hobby.

"All it does is make u feel you need to change your setup you originally planned for, because this is a deal that is hard to pass up and then come to find out, its not going to work and now your stuck with it and you still have to end up buying the equipment that was originally the plan". *case and point*

As far as paying or attending for the membership. Everyone has seen what TCMAS has to offer through other forums/threads/Frag swaps etc. are viewable to Non-members. So I'm not sure what you meant by not "seeing what is actually offered"?

I believe this is just a repeat of everything that has been said over and over. Thank you for your opinion and perspective, let's move on, change has been made *Voted On* and I hope we all can agree. If not, accept that TCMAS and its BOD/MOD has done a great deal of work and satisfy as much as they can as an organization. Will everyone be happy, no. Will members benefit from the change, yes.

So your analogy basically boils down to "people may not want to join TCMAS unless they know what's in it for them"

OK.

i thought about leaving but i realized i check this site a crap load of times during the day so i just paid and im glad i did and can support tcmas

Might be a lack of caffeine in my case. I can be grouchy in the morning.
Go get a red bull, a monster, and two five hour energys. 2 shots of high proof vodka, mix all together put in a 44oz mug and you sir will have a great day! :brainoverload:

I hold no responsibility if you actually do this.

this sounds fun might have to try it in vegas next week

Just out of curiosity; has anyone noticed changes in site traffic since the change? I feel like recently when I glance over at the people online the list seems half as big, but don't know if it's related to anything.
Odds are the ones that have left are the ones that didn't care much about the club in the first place. I haven't noticed a decline in activity from the usual faces on these forums, and it seems there are a lot more actual members now since the change.
