Came home and my main return pump, a Reeflo Tarpon, is making an odd noise. Sounds a bit like a pigeon cooing. Not rhythmic, but generally every 3-5 seconds. Ideas? Don't need my main pump to go out....

Thanks,

Rich

Contact the folks at Reeflo. They have very good support.

sounds like either the start of a bearing going out, the seals whining, ot the most common is the drip washer...

on the shaft between the pump head and the motow is a small washer. It should be centered on the shaft between the pump head and motor. Sometimes it moves toward one end and causes a whining noise. Check that first before doing anything else.

From Chris at Reeflo:

Rich, sounds like it could be the slinger-check for salt creep too

Slinger
There is a rubber washer (slinger) located on the shaft between the motor and the pump head. Its job is to prevent drips/salt creep from traveling along the shaft to the motor. Salt creep can cause the slinger to move away from the middle and rub against the motor causing a squealing sound. Use a flashlight to locate the slinger and use a flat head screwdriver to work it back to the middle of the shaft.

Slinger! That's what they call it...lol. Same thing happened on my dart. I moved it away and it got quieter, but still had a whining noise so I know the bearings are out on it as well. Hopefully yours is just the slinger.
