Anyone can sell their livestock for how ever much they want, depending on what they think it's worth and how quickly they want it to be sold. Same goes for corals and frags. It's their fish and they can price it however they want.

Take A World of Fish and Something Fishy in Richfield for example. They are neighboring LFS, but if you visit each store, they won't have the same prices for same fish, size, and type. It's all business and how well they feel they care for their livestock, simple as that.

What are you attempting to accomplish? There have been many reasons posted as to why the price is different. See a fish is not the same thing as a tool for example:

A tool is made in china and shipped to the US. Both Walmart and Kmart slap their stickers on it and sell it for nearly the same price. There is NO difference between the peg hook it hangs on or the dust it accumulates while hanging on the shelf... Thus determining the very close if not exact pricing.

A fish for example say a clownfish. A big bag of clowns are harvested off the coast of "clown Island" somewhere in the ocean. They are taken to a distributor who then ships them to 2 different LFSs on the same street. LFS1 takes good care of the fish thus creating more overhead costs. LFS2 drops them in the tank and decides to price them lower to sell them faster. Whether you purchase based on price, location, husbandry, or personal preference, no two LFSs are guaranteed to be at the same price level.

This is your standard Economics 101... Supply and Demand plus pricing based on overhead costs...

Take a simpler to understand situation. Fish aren't manufactured, so there are no set costs to making one. But let's take something that is manufactured. From your reasoning it should sell for the same amount, no matter where you buy it (if I follow your reasoning).

Say I want to buy a bottle of Coke. Would I expect to pay the same amount for it at Wal-mart as I do at Cub or Rainbow? What about at Super America, or Byerlys?

Say I wanted to buy a CFL bulb. Should I expect the same price for it at HomeDepot and Menards? What about at Ace Hardware? Or Wal-mart again? Or at Lightbulbs.com?

Then why would you expect DA to sell Coke or Bulbs for the same price as one of the other stores?

As for Hobbists, they may have an over inflated notion on what the fish they are trying to sell is really worth. I've seen that on the boards as well. That is similar to some homeowners when they sell their homes (especially in today's market). In those cases, let the market decide who's price is reasonable and who's is not. You can ask what ever you would like, but that doesn't mean your going to have any takers.

Oh, and BTW, I have an ocellaris for sale for $100,000.00 if anyone is interested. But act quickly, because tomorrow it goes back up to regular price.

I'm just having a slow day here and am probably feeling very dumb today, maybe its the hot weather outside... BUT... how do you decide what to pay for the fish; how do you determine what the "same" price to offer for the *same* fish at all LFS's or Etailers... not thinking about whether its wild caught or captive bred.

Once we get into the captive bred conversation the value you may want tooffer the breeder may change coz then the KBB value will need a new component..."value for being a responsible hobbyiest" :beerchug:

All said and done the fish themselves are free to be had from mother nature... the price is the value the fisherman thinks his time and effort are worth.:micro:

I'm still trying to derive the original purpose or intent of this post/question. Is it a gripe, curiosity, philosophical???

It's pure economics.

Don't know about Omen, but its one of the things we have to deal with frequently in moderating this place, and its usually a gripe or greed. People really get upset when someone else charges the "wrong" amount for their fish or coral. But, but, but, you can buy the same thing in New Zealand for $5 less!!!

I don't know why people get so worked up about this, if its really cheaper somewhere else, chill out and buy it there. Problem solved.

I figured it out, its all about the numbers, buyer-seller relationship. The seller not being a LFS or E-tailer determines the selling price based on a historical average thats derived using a complex formula that involves number of posts and the rep points; the number of posts are first evaluated into several segments, all posts in the "For sale classifieds" get the highest weightage :beerchug:

phew - I need a drink

Another reason I should moderate the Kelly Blue Book of fish...my initials are KBB.

We have a new moderator. The markets are now regulated, no need to goto New Zealand to find a deal of the century. :greenguy:

The value of all fish just went up!

Gotta make sure I wink to impress that I'm being funny, nothing worse than getting KBB mad... the price may go up more ;)

PS: I thought you knew that when you made the first post :lots:

additions to the KBB of fish...

buyer's TCMAS screen name is Taklu +400%
VAT Tax = buyer's post count/1000 X the star date/10000

Down side to KBB's KBB...

Cars have makes, models, options.

I can rename the common name of my fish. True Perc? baa. that's so last night. Now its a Ultra Orange clown.

it's a one of a kind. KBB can't value it because the name is not in her book. She can poo poo my new name and say 'that's just a clown' But is it? A zoanthid is a zoanthid right?

What it boils down to is this.

Do you like the coral/fish?
Do you like the price?

If you said yes to both, buy it. if you said no to either. Move on to the next one.
