Which fish would you pick and why? I only have a 20L and I want a pair of clown and a royal gramma or firefish. I don't want to overload the tank so I have to pick between the royal gramma and firefish.

Like Matt mentions, you gotta have a lid or screen on top for a firefish. Otherwise it probably won't last a month.

Putting the lid aside, just talking about the two fishes nothing else. Which would you pick and why.
Love both the fishes, great looking would have both in my tank. Now putting the lid aside I guess I would be left with the the Royale guy. :beerchug:
Firefish are less agressive from what I have seen. They may also hide more than a royal gramma, so may not be seen as much. The firefish also eat less and stay smaller.
Flip a coin, dude! They are both wonderful fish.

I've had a gramma for 9 mos. and it's always out swimming. Good personality, but the clowns pick on him once in awhile.
I have the exact opposite experience.... My royal gramma would stay out and about and would not fear any other fish in the tank, the firefish (pair) on the other hand won't come out if there is any other fish remotely close to their hole...
I'm sure it has something to do with the tank co-inhabitants.

I've had both. Won't have a Royal Gramma again. Mine was pretty aggressive and I couldn't keep a Peppermint shrimp in my tank or it would become dinner. The Firefish is more shy but I like it better. Both look cool though. How about a Black Cap Basslet? There's a neat fish.

I have both a RG and a purple FF in my reef and they are both great. The RG is a very active swimmer and always moving. The FF spends most of the day hoovering by its rock out in the open (I have a topless tank and have had this fish for well over a year). If I had to choose it would pick the RG due to its active swimming and movement in the tank.

I've had a lot of success with fire fish, but they tend to hide a lot.
I would go with a royal gramma for two reasons. You plan to get clowns, once they become a pair they become quite aggressive and I think a royal gramma could hold its own against them. Second reason is that firefish are shy and usually do best in a pair making you have four fish instead of three like you wanted.
Upgrade the tank and get both!:gay1:
Either would be a good choice, I like firefish for their look but the royal gramma for their presence in the tank. If you want a fish you'd see a lot and that is quite active it's no contest from what I've seen.

anyone experience their RG eating their shrimps? I have 2 small pepps that I still like and read somewhere that they eat the pepps.
I dont know about pepps but mine leaves my cleaners alone.
I have both fish. My RG seems to have a very small, low light spot in my tank that is "his" and he defends it very well. My FF stays out most of the time right in the middle of the tank, just hanging out. The FF does not bother any of the other fish (not even the other gobies) and they don't bother the FF. The RG is more into drama and will bicker with others. I was sort of surprised that my FF would be so laid back with several angelfish, a pair of clowns and a half dozen wrasses cruising around.

I've had both at one time or another. My current Royal Gramma I've had for 12 1/2 years!!!! The thing is indestructible. He swims around the center of the tank a lot, although he does like his hiding places. I've never seen him pick on any fish or shrimp. I like Firefish too, but always had trouble with them going into my overflows into the sump. You really need at least two firefish to keep them happy it seems.
