I had a tip to visit Sea Level in Hopkins. Not much discussion about the store on this forum...probably because they are not a sponser. It's still worth a visit. Nice guys there. Great deal on dry live rock. $2-2.50 a pound. Pretty good for retail I thought. They sell used tanks on consignment too.

Definately worth a trip to check out another LFS on the west side.

it is a cool place, nice stock and all. But if you had a choice would you be a patron to someone who pays your membership dues and makes this whole site free to us, or would you go there?

You are right though, worth checking out for sure!

not to be a pot stirer but the site was free LONGGGGGGGG before we had sponsors

Sea Level is listed in the LFS Locater. It was added by Redwinger quite some time ago I'm sure. It's nice to have options and see what other local businesses are doing. Freshwater is starting to be a topic around here too. I saw plenty of freshwater fish and supplies there as well.

I still remember when Doug owned it and it was called Aqualand..

Great guys there now too ;)

Now you stirred the pot!

what i am getting at, and some might have read about this- there are clubs out there that you have to be a paying member just to register and post. though most only charge memberships for stuff like showing up to frag swaps and meetings.

Shouldn't you be buying stuff from sponsors and not members if that is the case?

iv been there and personally will never go back because one of the employees sold me a sailfin tang for my 75 gallon and said that it could live its entire life in a 75 gallon. He also asked me how long the tank had been set up and i said almost a week and he said that was plenty of time before adding fish. So about a week later my tank crashed and everything living in my tank died, including my bicolor blenny that he also sold me. Not only do the employees laque knowlage, they also have overpriced items. It also seems like the employees are always trying to sell you something you dont need. That is why i will never return to that store.:coolmad:

aside form it popping up in search engines a couple times i hadnt heard much of it, and have never been there.

i dont go to sponsor stores exclusivley, i didnt cross OD off my list when they dropped sponsorship, i do favor stores that other members have had good experiences at and i am more likely to try a new place that has been recommended vs just stopping in.

once you find a good resource for your needs, its hard to try other places. IMO you have to trust the people you are buying from, the cost of the things we buy and the nature of the things we buy requires us to have confidence in the places we buy them from.

I will add this place t my list of "if im in the area" spots, but i have to say Andrews post has detered me from wanting to make the trip. I dont like pushy salesmen, especially in livestock. I cant tolerate uneducated aquatics personel and i have a sharp pinch in my spine when someone pushes livestock on someone who isnt ready for it. These are living creatures and that salesperson should have realised the fish was going into a bad situation and told Andrew to wait a bit and come back, we'll have another fish for you when your ready.

Just goes to show you, every interaction you have with a customer at a retail establishment effects your future business.

+1 on all counts

I wont be visiting this store pretty much based on what Andrew said.

I stop there from time to time while passing through. It's kind of like searching for a diamond in the rough though. You can get some real great deals on livestock, and it's fun to peruse through the used/consignment stuff.

My one negative comment is when I was starting out, I had a 75g and I asked them about skimmers, the salesperson said I've got just the thing for you. Then proceeded to hand me a box with a skimmer inside called a......... SeaClone..... Inexperienced as I was, I bought it.

I do think it's kinda funny that to this day, or at least last time I was in there, they use the seaclones on all their saltwater display and stock tanks.

If you're in the Hopkins area I would say stop on by and take look. Maybe you'll find a deal. But I wouldn't make a special trip.

Christensonjes nailed it....

I wouldnt recommend buying livestock from there but their dry goods prices are FAR cheaper than any of the other LFS.

it just seems that most of the staff, if not all of the staff lack education in the marine department. They are ok when it comes to fresh water.

The price on live stock is high. Some of the staffs does not know much about reef system. They need to fix that place up. It looks run down.

Go to the Forest Lake store. They seem to got it together very well there. Their salt buckets are good price. They also got some decent live stock.

As I read all the negative stuff about Sea Level I just want to say, if you ever feel you did not have a good experience at my store, please.. PLEASE let me know. If I can fix the problem for you, I will :)
