I am going to guess right off the bat you were not able to walk in at that age and just ask for a tang and have it sold to you with out them asking any questions about your set up etc?????

Dude - your playing the Devils Advocate, I get that - no worries Thang

Since the store in question is not being represented, its good that someone is doing it

(I wanna direct all back to the post I made earlier about someone letting them know there is a large disscussion thread going on about them here)

I do realize it was absolutely my fault for even being interested in a tang when i had a week old tank. I didnt do my research as much as i should have, i appoligize to any reefers that were offended by my post.

Sea Level is great place - I have spent alot of money there over the years. I will admit that most of it was freshwater related stuff though. I does irk me that they are a bit outdated as they still use undergravel filters and seaclones, but what can you do...some people are just old-school.

They are one of the only places that will take livestock trade-ins and actually give you a decent amount back. They also take in alot of unwanted fish like huge plecos and cichlids - not many other places do this anymore!

i gave them a yellow tail damsel and didnt get a penny back. i know its not a fish that is worth much but i was hoping to get maybe .50 cents. I was sorta ticked.

Jace, you shoud try to offer them another chance at sponsorship. If they don't read these now they may have no chance to change their impact on our community.

Any LFS will sell a tang to a guy that says he have a 75g tank...and a tank can be ready for fishes in one week. so what did this guy do wrong?

I will to to a point. And I will tell you the fish will outgrow your tank or become very unhappy. I'd suggest a small one to start with so it'll be a year or more before its size becomes an issue.

I will also tell you 1 week is likely not enough for the tank to cycle completely. While I would LOVE to sell you a fish I also have to look out for the health of the fish and suggest you wait a week or two. feel free to bring a water sample in and we can see how far along your tank is in it's cycle. If there is a fish you'd like, I'll hold him for you until we test your water, if it's ready you can take it home with you, If it's not, i'll hold it a bit longer for you.

I told someone exactly that this week. we tested his water and it was not ready. his fish is currently in my QT tanks. I suspect his cycle will be over sometime mid next week.

Say newbie comes in, says my 75 is a week old, give me that large naso tang! and I sell it to him. his tank spikes during the cycle and he comes to the forums and says I sell bad fish because it died. It's a fine line we have to dance in this business.

We all have our methods of selling fish.

I have spoke with Rob and John at Sea Level about TCMAS and their focus is just not in Saltwater at all. They make most of their money selling freshwater fish - that is why their saltwater selection is so limited. They simply do not see any reason to spend a ton of time with saltwater related stuff as their store is 90% freshwater...

The mark-up and profit with freshwater stock is much better then saltwater. Also - its just much easier to sell freshwater fish then marine coral and fish. Speak to any store owner with both fresh and salt - they will tell you freshwater is their money maker. *Usually*

Okay I will, What's the deal or behind the scenes action of being a sponser?

Hey everyone, I have been following this post so I decided to drive over there today. I just got back. They are very limited in their salt water, but they seemed very knowledgeable. He had a lot of suggestions for me on lowering my nitrate (still at 20) in my biocube 14. They suggested a poly filter to help collect the large particles, cleaning my bio-balls, cleaning the sponge, cleaning the crushed coral (no sand bed :-( ), keeping the air stone clean on the skimmer, ...

They have a bunch of used stuff for sale, and a TON of freshwater stuff. So I guess if your looking for salt fish and corals, they are limited. But I think they care about their customers.

When I toyed with the idea of using the expansion system (200G or so) for FW I started comparing my cost, to retail prices around town. I'm not seeing the markup some claim is there.

most stores have the same markup on both, being that marine fish are more easily killed by mistakes, or acclimating, or transit or mishandling or poor husbandry or just the wrong fish for your tank i would say that store owners would make less off saltwater because of those things. that is what the markup covers- if it were just marked up a little bit they would not have a very honorable guarantee on life.
